Hi guys,

I am currently wondering between going to TCOM (accepted) or doing the UNT SMP for a possible MD acceptance.
My reason for even thinking about rejecting TCOM is international medicine. I am originally from India and I would like to potentially work there in the future, and I have heard that their is not DO accreditation in India.

What do you guys thing? Does anyone know more about international medicine? Can anyone provide me with their personal UNT SMP experience with respect to getting an MD acceptance the same year as the program or is that rare?

Thank You

Supposedly they can practice in India. The information is behind the AOA membership wall though, so I can't access anything aside from the practice rights map.

If I remember correctly, you can practice in theory, but in reality, goodluck.

Source: 3 Indian (i.e., US citizens who want to help/practice in India) DOs from NYCOM.

Hi type12,
Thanks for the reply. What happened to your friends? What did they do?

No clue. I didn't ask details. I just remember one wanted to live and practice there, but was turned down (don't know the logistics), and the other two wanted to do volunteer work every year, but said they couldn't because they were DOs.

I tried looking around for DO's to practice internationally, especially in India. Seems like their policy status has not been updated since 1999. Its not official on what the practice rights are for DO's but it says you need an Indian nationality status, Check out this link: http://www.westernu.edu/bin/ime/international-practice-rights.pdf

I was able to find some more info from an old thread but India's status has not changed regarding DO's:

India
Year of Last Request: 1999
Scope of Practice: undetermined
The AOA received a response to its 1998 inquiry regarding licensure of US-trained DOs. The Medical Council of India stated that osteopathic medicine degree is not recognized for the purpose of IMC Act, 1956. However, they did state that a DO might apply after getting Indian nationality and after implementation of screening test Regulation/Provision in the Indian Medical Council Act.

You might want to check out the Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine, and look into it a bit more. Try emailing some people, good luck: https://www.osteopathic.org/osteopathic-health/about-dos/dos-around-the-world/Pages/default.aspx

Yeah, I checked the AOA website and it was listed as undetermined since 1998-1999 with no precedence being set...kind of scary.
I am a Indian national so that should not be a problem. I checked the IMC Act of 1956 and found that, if I am reading it right, that usually a screening test is done along with taking into account the foreign med institution qualification.
I am still scared about the fact a precedence hasn't been set yet about this. What do you guys think? would SMP be better and safer than risking it?

I have heard some not-so-great stories about reapplicants to TX schools that had been accepted to TCOM the year prior. Other TMDSAS schools will know you were accepted to TCOM and apparently they do not look favorably on this.

Also, have you even been accepted to UNT's MS program? They will wonder why you are applying to their program when you have already been accepted to their affiliated medical school.

No, I haven't applied yet. I have just been thinking about what is the best path to take. If I do take the SMP path, I will be talking to TCOM first. I feel like going behind their back will not be very good. As far as other MD schools, I am hoping that my international medicine reason will be good enough, hopefully.

What did the people ended up doing when they didn't get accepted by MD in the not-so-great stories?

Not sure if it helps, but when the panel of admissions from different TX med schools visited us during the program, most said that the program is looked well upon after it's completed, but I know plenty of people who got in during the program.
