TCOM
Pros

  • S-teir DO, matches well with the specialties I'm interested in outside of primary care (PM&R, psych).
  • Super strong social network, I've lived in Fort Worth for 7 years.
  • Research opportunities in specific focuses that led me into medicine.
  • Continuing part-time with the volunteer work I've been doing.
  • Weather.
  • I would rather stay in Texas/the south to stay closer to family. TCOM matches well in Texas.
  • Easier transition.
  • Cost.
  • My PCP growing up was a DO, so I don't look at OMM as weird. My view of it from growing up is it is a diagnostic tool, but rarely (if ever) treatment.

Cons

  • DO
  • Extra board prep with USMLE and COMLEX
  • Honors/Pass/Fail, but I heard from student there that this actually isn't bad.

Rosalind Franklin
Pros

  • MD
  • It's an "adventure", but I also look at it like this could be a negative because it's such a huge transition. I don't want to layer on stress.

Cons

  • Cost/weather/all that stuff
  • RFU seems to be a more lower regarded school between the two, even US News (I know) has TCOM above it in any category I'm interested in.

Summary: Basically, I don't want to chose a school simply because "MD over DO".

I have an extensive experience and knowledge about RFU. Pm me if you are interested in chatting.

TCOM student here. You’ll probably get a lot of people to tell you to go to RFU over TCOM but id stay stick to TCOM. Having familial support throughout your 4 years is going to be invaluable as well as saving 100k+ in debt

Well based off your last statement, looks like TCOM is the way to go.

Normally, I am in the MD over DO 11 times out of 10 camp. Howeverrrr, for the very first time, I am going to say the DO makes sense here given your goals and priorities. The main reason I can swallow the disadvantages that come with choosing a DO over MD is because of your specialities of interest. As you likely know, you interests are among the least competitive specialties. So, any US school should be perfectly capable of setting you up to reach your career goals. Just know you might be shutting the door on the competitive specialties if you find interest in them.

So, since both schools can allow you to hit your long term goals, you should go w the school that meets your short term goals. That seems to be TCOM. Ultimately, it sounds like you’ll be happier there and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it costs less. Also, RFU is among the worst MD’s when it comes to matching into surgical specialties, so you’ll be in a tough spot either if that’s the route ultiamtely find a passion for. Never thought I’d be saying this, but go DO!!!!

I would go TCOM because of your goals as well. Those specialities are DO friendly and since you would like to stay in Texas for residency and afterwards as an attending, TCOM will help you achieve that.
