Hello,

I was considering Teach for America right after college but had a few concerns. I am fully committed for the two years but can't figure out the residency requirements. My home state has only one Teach for America site and it is medium sized. It also has very strict residency requirements and only one medical school.

I am most concerned about being placed outside of my state and losing residency from any state. It gets confusing because you usually have to live in the state for a year before being granted residency but things get tricky with the application time line for medical school. I would prefer to retain my states residency but part of me also wants to travel and experience another state. Has anyone experienced having to move to another state so soon before applying and becoming the resident of the state you are placed in? Are there any states easier to becoming residence of than others. I am strongly considering Texas, Florida and California.

First of all, you won't lose your residency status in two years if you're doing TFA as long as your parent's address remains in your home state.

Secondly, I HIGHLY encourage you to apply to medical school, or at least take the MCAT, before committing to TFA. You simply won't have enough time to complete and *perfect* your application. TFA is very hard and it leaves you little time to study and/or complete your application. Many excellent schools have deferral programs for TFA so that is the best route to take.
