What exactly is a teaching hospital? Why are they important? Which DO Schools have their own teaching hospitals? Do all MD schools have their own?

Thanks,
Bird.

Most MD schools have teaching hospitals, while most DO schools don't (public DO schools are the notable exceptions). There are many benefits of having an affiliated teaching hospital. First, many teaching hospitals are large, academic, level I/II trauma centres with significant research and clinical opportunities. The quality of the clinical rotations is standardized, and you get more exposure to a wide range of diseases with higher patient flow. You additionally could network with the residency programs at these teaching hospitals to gain an edge for your residency application.

A teaching hospital is a hospital that has Graduate Medical Education (=residency programs). They are important because that's where you get your further medical training to specialize in whatever you choose to go into.

A university teaching hospital is a hospital that is directly affiliated with the university (for example: UCSD has UCSD Medical Center). Theses are considered academic teaching hospital as there is usually basic science and medical education involved.

Not all teaching hospitals are university hospitals.

Most MD schools do have their own but not all (Like Rosalin Franklin/ Chicago Medical School).

Most DO schools do not have their own university hospital but are required to have an OPTI which is basically binding contracts with community teaching hospitals.

As far as I know, Oklahoma State and Michigan State are the only schools with their own teaching hospitals.

Rowan, too. May be others (TCOM?), but I don't know the full list.

They are important because they are set up for teaching not just service. So they have didactics, are used to having students and used to close oversight.
