Tell me about your LOR's

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1 committee letter
1 letter from current MD school clinical faculty (MD)
1 letter from previous MD school clinical faculty and former ED Director(MD)
1 DO letter from current ED Director (DO)

2 science ( O-Chem, Physics)
1 Non Sci (American Sign Language)
Volunteer supervisor
DO

Maximum needed for DO schools:

Either DO/MD or both
And committee letter
Or two science professors.

This list will cover you for 99% of schools if you have all of that.

Three is actually on the low side and five is around the average. Once you hit 7 then I agree with you.

You are truly misinformed. They will be severely annoyed if you send 7 letters. Do you know that unt-tcom hás 1 committee letter and that's it? Any more is extra! Lol I'm serious

I think the max is 5. They state on their site how many they'd like to see.

Quick question about LORs: If I had a science professor who was an MD/Phd, can I use his LOR to fulfill the DO/MD LOR requirement? I shadowed a DO but I do not think I'll be getting a LOR until very late.

I got 6 letters plus committee letter, 5 academic and 1 professional/physician letter. Five from people who know me well and one academic letter I got just to make sure I satisfied the committee's hunger for a pointlessly excessive number of letters.

That should work. I'm not aware of any requirement where the physician letter must be someone you shadowed, or at least not at the schools I'm applying to.

Must a committee letter only be from professors/faculty from the undergrad institution that puts it together or can you have your other LORS be put into it too? As in can I have my DO and EC letter included in the letter packet as well? Or do I have to process them separately?

5 letters:
CC Orgo professor (science)
CC Bio professor (science)
Grad school Epi professor (science)
Grad school program chair/professor (non-science)
MD whom I did volunteer research work for

No DO letter, no letter from an MD/DO whom I shadowed, no committee letter
Did fine in the DO 2012-2013 cycle

One of my letter writers is an MD, who was my professor and has been my mentor since I took his class. would this suffice the MD/DO LOR? thanks

it should be fine; just be sure you have other letters from science professors

4 Total

1 MD
1 DO
1 science (taught physiology psychology with lab and psychopharmacology)
1 research PI (work in lab for two years and also took a science course under the professor)

I also think my PI's letter will be the strongest..

Unless you are getting a committee letter as well, you should supplement your package with a nonscience prof. letter.

Are the committee letters you guys mentioned the same as I think? I got a committee letter written by the science facutly and they asked for another two LORs from one science professor and a non-science one. What is it counted as?

I have a package containing one cLOR, one from science professor, one from the volunteer coordinator and one from a MD. Does it satisfy the requirement?

If I understood you correctly, the cLOR is the same as the committee letter. Usually, it is a letter provided by your school's pre-health advisor. At my school, they asked me to fill out a a long application, provide an autobiography, a copy of my AACOMAS and 2 LOR's from professors and 1 from a physician. After that, they combine everything into one packet and send them to the schools I'm intending to apply to.

My school has a premed committee that writes evaluations for applicants, if requested. I think that's what most schools ask for. That or two science letters.

Check each schools requirements online. They have it on the websites.

Exactly. But my advisor only asked a minimum two LORs in which 1 is from science professor and 1 from anyone (science or non-science)

So 1 committee letter+1 LOR from science professor+1 from MD+1 from non-science person (the volunteer coordinator) are in my package. The question is: some schools require two science LORs and I don't know if I should ask for another LOR from any other professor. Will the committee letter be everything?

I couldn't tell you for sure. Perhaps, you should call around or visit schools' websites to get a better idea. Remember, the clock is ticking and you need to hurry. Professors don't like last minute requests.

Committee Letter
1-from Physics professor
1-from head of my degree program
1 from local ER doc (MD)that knows me from the ambulance.

Still trying to find DO to shadow for letter- needle In a haystack in this state.

  • Psych professor
  • Pharmacology professor
  • Orgo lab instructor
  • DO cardiologist
  • MD cardiologist (although this one only went out to MD schools)

CC biology prof
CC Gen Chem prof
DO Internist (shadow)
MD Internist (shadow)

Don't know if I still need a non-science LOR...If I do, I am have to beg a prof who do not even remember me for a non science LOR since I took my non-science classes 4+ years ago.

1. Osteopathic Physician (Shadow)
2. Principal Investigator/Professor of Medicine @ prestigious med school
3. Chem professor (met in office hours, discussed, never delivered)
4. Human Phys professor (met in office hours, discussed, never delivered)
5. Vice Principal of HS I sub at frequently

I'm probably going to get 2 more science professors this fall to substitute in for the ones that never delivered their letters to interfolio. I have to take 6 more classes to be in great shape for med school anyway.

I'm also going to shadow an MD internist at some point, and hopefully add that to the list.

I'm not sure what to do about the committee letter. I might try to pull something out of my A by discussing my situation and recovery with the premedical advisor at my UG school. I'm not a part of a formal post-bac program, I just crash the classes via open campus/university.

Is anyone else using VirtualEvals to upload LOR's to schools?

My school's committee has already uploaded my letter packet and released them to the schools I'm applying to. I'm afraid that it may be too early to send my LOR's, especially that secondaries are still not sent out. What do you guys think?
