Telling programs they're #1

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think (based on ASHP match rules) you're not supposed to tell programs where you're ranking them and they aren't allowed to tell you where/if they're ranking you.

In my thank you emails to the preceptors and RPD at my top program, I told them all I was gonna rank them number 1 on my list. Is that frowned upon/does anyone have any thoughts on doing that?
Yup you can't say that specifically. You can insinuate it, but I'd just go with something along the lines of you were left impressed after the interview and still very interested blahblahblah

Thank you everyone for the advice so far! Any thoughts on what to do if those emails have already been sent?

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I bet you're not the first they've heard that from and you probably also won't be the last. But I'm also a student so I guess I really don't know

"This is a top program for me."

"I am strongly considering this program."

Also helps in the long run when you don't actually rank them first but they ranked you first.

I just ended my thank you (only at my top choices), with, "now, I eagerly await the match results with hopes of working with you/matching at your program in the future." This should not influence their ranking of you, since they hear it all the time. They rank you depending on how you scored on their interview, your application packet, and letters of recommendation. If you are genuinely interested in the program, write thank you cards. I have heard that some programs do not even receive these handwritten thank you cards until after the match is over, but it is the right thing to do. Ultimately, if you like any of the programs you have interviewed at, you hope to match at their program. You do not have to specify where they are on your rank list, but it truly is a privilege to match anywhere at this point. The market is flooded. Good luck 🙂
