Anyone else catch any of the coverage of the T.O. news today? I don't know what to make of it, really, and have no idea what actually happened...I suppose none of us do, really.

But I thought it was interesting to see some people's reactions and think about what they say about our views on suicide...

I heard at least a few espn commentators saying that they didn't know why, couldn't put a finger on it, maybe they were wrong, but when they first heard he might have committed suicide, they just didn't "buy it"....for reasons like how full of himself he is (TO loves TO too much to kill himself......), how healthy and what a great athlete he is, how it's "always something" with TO, and this and that and the other.

Now he came out and said no, it wasn't suicide after all, and they feel like they've been proven right...Like it's that impossible the guy wouldn't want to talk about a failed suicide to the whole country, plenty of which has for years made a fuss about what an ass he is.

His publicist actually had the nerve to say at the press conference that T.O's got "25 million reasons to be alive." (His 3 year contract is worth 25M) Cuz, you know, money makes everything better.

Why's it so hard for people to believe a football player might be severely depressed?

Any thoughts on the whole situation?

My thoughts are...

Male Borderline

That was the first thing that came to my mind, too. We have some patients on the unit with similar pathology that are suicidal...without the money or fame, of course.

Now they're saying he was playing with his pain killers and took too many (i.e. "he mixed his painkillers with supplements").

This can be any number of things...

It wasnt because of an attempted suicide. If he did try to kill himself, he wouldnt have been able to leave the hospital in a day. Dont you have to stay in the hospital for days or weeks until you are cleared by a psychiatrist? Well, anyways, what the publicist said was just plain ugly.

I thought the "25 million reasons to stay alive" comment was sickening and arrogant. The whole press conference really made me feel like they were joking about depression. How ugly.

As a lifelong niner fan I have to say TO is probably getting desperate, and the report of Suicide was legit. He is 32, dropped 4 balls in his first start since early last year, and is a complete narcissist.....IE. total lack of inate self-worth. He needs help......... Sazi, save him.😉

It wouldn't be ethical for Sazi to get involved as he's already disclosed a conflict of interest above. 😛

Besides that, Sazi's probably a Giant's fan.

I agree with the arrogance and stupidity of the "25 million reasons" comment ... That is so horrible and so sad. I feel bad for TO. I agree with borderline with narcissist features. I don't think that was an accident. A pro athlete knows how to deal with medications, especially pain meds. He is in a bad way and needs help.

There was a profile on TO in the last ESPN the magazine... seems he actually had a very abusive/neglectful childhood. Raised by his grandmother who sounded like she had severe and persistent mental illness... exquisitely paranoid, rasied him to "trust no-one", and wouldn't allow most electrical devices into the home. Provided some interesting background to his current obvious need to be loved.

Thanks for the link OPD.

This is great news.

Not only is he not dead, he'll make the trip for the next game and possibly even see playing time.

😀
