I'm in an accelerated medical program, so I'm guaranteed acceptance to medical school. This semester (first semester of sophomore year) was really bad, but fortunately I only got a warning and am still in the program.

My grades this semester were -
Elective: A
Genetics and Evolution: B-
Physics I: B
Organic Chemistry I: C
Organic Chemistry I Lab: B

My GPA this semester is a 2.98. My cumulative GPA is now a 3.60 (I got a 4.0 first semester and a 3.83 second semester).

I slacked off a lot this semester but won't let this ever happen again. I know I'll get into medical school because of the program, but could this semester ruin my chances for good residencies or anything like that? How do I compensate? Just keep aiming for a 4.0?

1. Residencies do not care what you got in undergrad. :smack: They don't even care what your grades are in MS1 and MS2, so undergrad GPA really means nothing once you get into medical school.

2. sGPA (BCPM) matters more than cGPA

3. don't get kicked out of the program. you have the golden ticket.

just wondering OP... how many kids in your class from last year don't want to do medicine anymore?

and how many kids aren't getting good enough grades?

I don't know. Obviously some people will be discouraged from medicine if they don't have the grades. I'm not sure what you're getting at. I still want to go into medicine.

I'm not directing anything at you. Legit wondering about the efficacy of these programs at producing docs

Didn't you already ask this a couple days ago? Like others have said, it won't affect you but you should be super glad that you are in that program.

People who can stay in the program become doctors unless they mess up in medical school. Simple as that. If I pull off another semester like this I'll be out of the program, so it's not like these programs let sub-par people enter medical school.

yeah but do you have any rough #s? Not asking for specific %s but just a ballpark of people who have left the program vs people admitted in the program or similar stats.

I know for my year roughly 350 people applied, and 14 were accepted. So far no one has been kicked out in my year. For the year ahead of mine, three people were kicked out.
