With just a few more months of rotations left I seem to be having an increased anxiety about graduating and starting work. I just don't feel ready, any other 4th years out there feeling the same way?

I know a lot of my classmates feel that way and are flocking to internships instead. I am excited to be done and out practicing. What are you worried about specifically?

Totally normal. No one feels 100% ready to take on the world right after they graduate. At least no one I talked to. Everyone is concerned about something - clients, surgical competency, etc. But that's why it's called "practicing" medicine. It's practice, not instant perfection 😉

I am 3rd year right now, and the thought of starting clinics and then graduating is pretty terrifying to me! I have talked to a couple of people about it and they said that your first year out in practice will be the most difficult, but you just have to learn to make and rely on your own decisions. My own vet said it took him several years before he felt comfortable as a veterinarian.

I know the job market is tough, but hopefully there are still practices out there that will offer some sort of mentorship to new grads?

I am mostly nervous about the independence aspect of large animal medicine. It's just you and your truck out there. It would be nice to find a practice where another vet lets you ride with them for the first little bit, but large animal jobs are hard to come by so you often don't have many options as far as mentorship goes.

Usually it's the most capable ones that are the most nervous.
