is anyone else somewhat freaked out about getting on a plane this week after homeland security chief said that intelligence has determined that there is evidence that there is some terrorist attack planned for this week?

thanks intelligence! now what?

-my bearded persian ass has to get on a plane sunday night. im used to being interogated at airports, i don't mind; i do have a thing against being blown up, though.

-any thoughts? are any of you guys postponing interviews?

I just called and rescheduled two interviews that I had planned for Thursday and Friday. I know I might be paranoid, but hey, look at the name......

Keep in mind, the FBI did the same thing a couple of weeks ago, and nothing happened.

You can't let these people scare you.

And be a little comforted by the fact that, at least on a plane, you are going to be the beneficiary of increased security on all levels.

Prepare to have at least one encounter with their magical wands!

And if something does happen on your plane, at least you can go out kicking some terrorist butt.

Security is very tight at the airports. I doubt there will be another incident involving planes. I believe it will be safe to fly.

I think it's important to remember that, at least in my opinion, they release these warnings in part so that if something were to happen, the government would have their *ss covered! You know, "Well, we warned last Monday that it was likely this would happen....."

Chadleez, I'm not sure I'm understanding you correctly. Do you really believe that if another catastrophe like 9-11 occurred, the government would be sitting back and saying, "Phew, we called that one! At least our ratings will still be up." ?

Please correct me if I'm interpreting you incorrectly. From what I'm reading, it sound like you're insinuating that "saving face" matters more to them than actually protecting us. I can't say that I agree...not with something this horrible and of this magnitude.

How much protection is provided by them stating that 'there may or may not be a terrorist attack' eminent? I beleive one aspect is to save face, as Yelling 'Fire' when a building is burning down does nothing to put out the fire.

i'm flying across the country tomorrow ... halloween. yikes ... but i think it should be fine. anyone else doing the same?

That isn't what I meant, but I can see how you could get that. I was talking more along the lines of 9-11 is being called a HUGE intelligence failure. They either didn't have the info to begin with, or they had so much they overlooked the pertinent info. I was saying that, for example, say there was a car bomb in LA. Something they can't really pick up on, especially if it is just one person who decides to do this, because this person doesn't belong to some terror network. With a warning like this, they can go back and say we warned the public of this possibility. Of course, this is all hypothetical, and the warning they have was unspecific to any targets. I do think the government is trying to protect us, but to think that politics has absolutely no part in this, I think, is wrong. But I hope that isn't the main thing on their minds. I feel like I'm rambling, so if this makes no sense let me know and I'll try to clarify.

Did you know they don't even allow food stands in the airport to have plastic knives? Now that's really strict. Actually, I think the plastic spoons are sharper than the knives anyway.

This probably doesn't contribute in any way. I just thought it was funny. You're all dumber now for having read this. 🙂

i'm also flying on halloween. And to make matters worse i'm flying into DC. Anyone gonna be at USUHS on thursday?

There is a lot to be said for a general increased level of alertness.

Some docu on CNN, I think it was, showed how the ability of the population to recognize things that are out of the ordinary has led to several terrorist actions being stymied in Israel. For example, a woman there noticed that a man was wearing a long coat on what was a very hot day. She alerted authorities and they accosted the man. Turned out he was strapped with explosives. Little things out of the ordinary such as this deserve notice.
