Test bank exclusively for minority students? WTF?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As for SDN condoning abusing prescription medications or other illegal practices, thats total bull****. I've seen so many of the threads regarding that, and while there are people on both sides, those saying illegal abuse of medication is OK are in the definite minority.

I suggest you go re-read them, especially the allo forum versions. While the # of drug/illegal old test users may be a minority, the majority condone it/dont care.

Its not illegal to use old tests. A lot of professors don't like it, but thats because they're lazy and dont want to write new ones every semester. I personally think the professors who just post PDFs of the old ones up on blackboard have the right of it, because letting everyone have them is a lot more fair than just the people who are in special "clubs" or know someone who took the class last semester and kept his/her exams.

Now, if you were having people take the test a day early (by saying they had to be out of town for an interview or something), and report the questions to you/take pictures of them, that would be way against the rules. I know people who have done this (not any organizations though), and I don't think very many of us would condone such actions....

As for illegal use of drugs, I still say the majority of people in allo/pre-allo come on the side thats against that.

I did my undergrad at the University of Washington, and this program is for real. So all those people who want to discredit the OP, your skepticism is unfounded.

I also don't qualify for it because I am Chinese-American and not a first-generation college student nor economically disadvantaged.

I agree that it's not "fair", but honestly you're born with the color and the situation that you have...it's not something you can control and I would only waste 5 minutes of your life thinking about it. Use the rest of your time to do the best you can with what you have.

Ah but it is illegal to use old tests without explicit written authorization since it is the intellectual property of the creator (ie the professor). When they post old tests on their own sites, that is of course fair game. But when they do not do this and sometimes even make an active effort to ensure that no copies of the test leave the testing room, this is a different story. People that have access to tests in this case are breaking the law and committing academic dishonesty because they have access to likely test material that everyone else does not. This is where the mind your own business or join a frat counterargument kicks in.

If they let you keep your copy of the test, there's no way it's "illegal" to give it to someone else.

um.. if the professor lets you keep the test.. it's yours.. you can do w/e you want with it.

this semester..1/2 my classes dont give tests back.. likely because teachers reuse tests. one makes all his tests available online, which is super awesome and fair. the one that doesnt post test but gives them back uses back questions... not very fair because people just ask from their upperclassmen friends.. and i dont because i think it isnt fair.. but you can still do well w/o back tests so its no biggie... i guess.

example: i have a friend who improved his test score by MORE THAN 50 pts in a prereq between the first and second exam.. the difference maker? he asked for a friend's copy of the tests (from last year) from the same professor...

Yeah, profs that don't want you to have the tests will ask that you return them before you leave. I had one like that this past quarter. What sucks about the original post is that the school funds a program which will only allow certain students to have resources to essentially all professor's old exams. This is valuable even if the professor does not reuse old exams as it lets one obtain a feel for how questions will be ordered and the difficulty of each question. When random students keep the test, that's all fair. But when the school has the tests and only gives them to a few, then that's not fair. UW likes to do these things, like giving all economically disadvantaged students free tuition and expenses with minimal gpa requirements, but this is for another discussion another time. These things probably won't end, so nothing to do but bitch about it.
