Sorry, I hate posting individual circumstances but I think this one is warrented and would love anyone's advice.

I will be taking orgo 1 and 2 over the summer in preparation for the DAT and was wondering if I should take the DAT after orgo one finishes or if I really should go all the way through orgo two and take the test afterwards in the middle of August? Are there enough orgo 2 questions on the test to warrent the two month later test date?

Also, what's the final word on the kaplan class? Is it worth it for someone like me who will have a structured study regiment anyway? Other than forcing you to look at the material once a week, is there a huge benefit to taking the class? What about the online course for half the price?

Thanks in advance.

When are you applying to dental schools?

I'm applying this cycle.

August is probably the latest that anyone should take the DAT. If you can study the material on your own... maybe you can take the exam sooner. It depends on how easily you learn new information. If you can't learn new info on your own, it might be better to wait and finish your two organic chemistry courses.

And from what I've heard on SDN... Kaplan is only good because it helps you organize your studying. You don't really learn any new information. If you are very organized and structured... your money would be better spent elsewhere.

my advice - take organic I and organic I only this summer. do organic 2 later. cramming both semesters of organic chemistry into an already shortened semester while trying to study for the DAT is a recipe for disaster. the vast majority of organic on the DAT is from first semester. depending on your school, the only things you will need to teach yourself is some stuff on NMR and lab techniques... and really... I think the Kaplan blue book is enough organic.

i don't know if its true or not, but every practice test i took had many questions from organic chemistry2. if you cover all the topics in orgo2 then you will be fine. orgo2 helped me a lot. in orgo1 i learned a lot, but it wasn't enough. now organic chemistry is a piece a cake for me.
