This is a thread of hope. Different schools look for different things and it's not all based on stats.
So here's my story for the cali folks:

Rejected pre-secondary: UCSD
On- hold post-secondary: UCI
And yet I got an interview invite to UCSF...wtf?

Rankings are silly, and admissions folks boggle my mind.

I wish I could remember who said this, but I think of admissions in this way:

Med school admissions is truly a crapshoot, the only thing you can do is weigh the dice as much as possible beforehand.

Words to live by in this crazy process.

Or tip the help.
An extra benjamin stapled to an app can do wonders 😉

Does anyone have any stories of inspiration?

My UC experience

1. Rejected PREsecondary from Davis
2. Secondary from San Diego
3. Secondary from Irvine
4. Put on hold for interview in San Diego
5. Secondary from UCSF
6. Interview UCSF
7. Interview Irvine
8. Secondary from UCLA
9. Rejected from UCLA
10. Alternate List Irvine
11. Accepted UCSF
12. Pulled off waitlist the next day at Irvine

I've been thinking about it for years...makes no sense to me but I am not about to complain!!

I was waitlisted at AZCOM which is a DO school but have received 2 MD acceptances. What were they thinking...🙄

Interviews at Cornell and Case Western; rejected post-secondary at SUNY Downstate. According to the statistics in MSAR, it was more likely that I'd get an interview at SUNY Downstate than at those other schools.

That is why UC is so freaking unique, we create the monster

Interview-UCSF, UCLA, Columbia,

Hold for interview: UCSD, UCI

Not a word from Stupid Davis after the XXX Secondary. They must still hating me that I turned them down and pick Cal for undergrate.

Therefore do not just apply UC, NY is a good place for CA people too. The guy interviewed me at UCSF said he wants me to go there. I hope he is not lying. Will see

😱 😱 😕

did you conduct the interview in a foreign language?

Is this thread only for you Cali guys? I have a good story -

I applied to a ton of schools, everywhere. Got a few outright rejections, but then got some great screens (Stanford, Loyola, Case, Pitt). Was put on 'hold' for an interview at my state school.

Invited to one school within a couple of weeks, and then accepted within 2 weeks! 🙂 (Drexel)

One more interview in late February. No response from any other schools. 😕

So one interview, one acceptance. I guess that's all you need really. Such a crazy process...

I am a little confused about this admissions process too.

Got an interview at all the top schools but was rejected pre-interview at UCSF. just a little curious why they thought I wasnt even worth putting on interview hold

Well, UCSF is also a "top school," so they're rightfully very selective in who they interview. In the same vein, you shouldn't really be expecting an interview from any school, regardless of what other schools you've interviewd at, since each school looking for its own unique qualities. Perhaps you didn't have what UCSF was looking for... modesty maybe? 😉

must be the cow poo. that shiet is toxic!

UCSF- hold for interview
UCLA- no response
UCD- rejected post-secondary quickly
UCI- accepted 3 weeks after interview
UCSD- interviewed 2 months ago and no response

also got an interview at Cornell immediately but NO other "top schools" (besides UCSD)

doctorkevin,

CONGRATS on your UCI acceptance! you'll love it there, it's an awesome school in a prime location. best of luck to ya!

Don't forget that if you're out-of-state, you're competing for only 20% of the spots in the first-year class. I've heard that UCSF likes to take MD/PhD people for many of their out-of-state spots, but perhaps that's just what I'm telling myself to make my rejection letter a little more palatable 😀
