Has anyone used the Texas state legislated academic fresh start option and got accepted to med school? It is a program that allows you to essentially erase the last 10 years of your grades and have them not be considered for application into a post-bac. program like med school.

Does it even erase grades that you got while attending non-TX schools? If so, I see a lot of non-trads moving to TX in the future. A lot of people get <3.0 in college, decide later to persue medicine, and do a post-bacc and get 4.0 only to see their cum. GPA climb to 3.1.

Yes, you can eliminate any grades that are 10+ years old, no matter the source. There is a huge catch, however, in that you need 90+ hours of "new" credits, so basically you are starting over and would need to complete junk like english composition. I too am strongly considering going this route, though I don't have any info as to the success of applicants using Fresh Start.

Thankfully I am considered a resident of TX, due to property ownership, attending high school, and having a parent there... I have researched this pretty thoroughly the past few weeks so PM me if you have any ?s.

You can probably do 90 credits in three years if you go full time. Once you finish the pre-reqs, instead of filling the rest with junk, you could always take upper level BIO that will be helpful. Sounds like it may be a good deal for certain people. I am surprized by how progressive Texas is. They also have the 10% rule down there which, though it might not be fair, is certainly a fresh idea.

You can do a search for "Texas academic fresh start" and get all the info. You have to register in a Texas public college in order for it to count. I think any grades, from any college (not only Texas schools) can be erased, you cannot pick and choose though, F's are erased along with those precious A's. Not a bad deal for someone that messed up early in their college life. It was enacted in the Texas Senate by a lawmaker that had a relative that could not get into law school (I think).

here's a question:

for schools that require a degree upon matriculation, can you report your first undergrad degree and not the grades? that seems like it would be a stretch.

Did you get accepted into med school as an Academic Fresh Start applicant? Can one apply under Academic Fresh Start even if one has earned a bachelor's degree?

Did you ever receive an answer to the above question?
