Hi,

I have some questions about applying to texas schools.

I'm an international student who has studied in Canada for 10+ years and attended a canadian university. I have a permanent residence status in Canada.

I'm wondering which Texas schools are friendly to international students? I did search around and couldn't find the right answer.

However, I did notice that UT Southwestern accepted a few Canadian students.. but Im not too sure about other schools.

If I apply this week using TMDSAS, how late will I be? Thanks!!

If I were you, I wouldn't go to Texas, it's like the complete opposite of Canada.

By international, you mean OOS right? :meanie:

By law, Texas public schools have to fill their classes with at least 90% Texas residents or something like that, so it's pretty hard to get in if you are OOS (including international). Even then, most schools fill more than 95% with in-state applicants. UTSW is the closest to taking advantage of the remaining 10% slots, so your chances are slightly better there. Baylor is the only private school in Texas, so I don't think the law applies there. However, they strongly prefer Texas students anyway and it's usually around 70-90% in-state.

Just curious though, what makes you want to come to Texas all the way from Canada? (I love Texas btw, there's nothing wrong with it - just wondering)

Dug out my MSAR for you. International applicant statistics, EY 2009
Baylor - Interviewed 0/215, 0 Matriculated
A&M - Interviewed 2/63, 4 Matriculated (?)
TTUHSC - Interviewed 0/48, 2 Matriculated (?)
UTMB - Interviewed 4/81, 3 Matriculated
UTH - Interviewed 0/0, 0 Matriculated
UTSA - Interviewed 0/57, 0 Matriculated
UTSW - Interviewed 14/94, 6 Matriculated

No data for PLF.

Best of luck!

Thank you all for your replies!

I was thinking about applying to increase my chances of getting an acceptance this year.

Does anyone know if texas schools consider OOS and Internationals equally? Also, what kind of stats do you need to get an interview?

I checked the TMDSAS and I realized that they require 2x 2500 character essays.. different from AMCAS, which means I have to start over

Thanks

I am very skeptical of that MSAR data.

UTSW, UTMB, and A&M are your best bets by far -- TCOM is also good if you are interested in DO.

I know UTSA does NOT accept internationals.

UTH gave me an interview as an international applicant one cycle ago, I'm not sure if their policies have changed.

I am pretty sure Baylor does accept a few internationals, same with Texas Tech (though their secondary was a pain, I had to call a few times to explain why I couldn't get past their online forms).

EDIT: By the way, it is pretty darn late to be doing TMDSAS applications. I sent them around this time two years ago and got zero interviews -- then I applied again last year sending everything on day 1 and got interviews everywhere except for UTSA and Baylor. Good luck.

My impression of why the law was conceived was to make sure that Texas has a good amount of doctors. So the OOS students they accept are probably the ones who mention something about wanting to move to Texas permanently (not just for medical school). I can't gather anything from the stats posted by TexasHopeful about whether they prefer OOS over International or vice-versa, but if you can give them the impression (true or not) that you want to practice in Texas, I believe you can significantly improve your chances (assuming you have good stats).

Oh I also lived in Texas from elementary school through college even though I was international.

It probably made a big difference.
