I want to see an honest answer here, but people always talk about how Texas schools are so in-state biased it's not even worth applying without godly stats. I can't help but seeing on the MSAR that their MCAT 10-90 %ile ranges are like 25-33 at some places. Realistically, what kind of stats would an out of stater need to be able to snag a seat? I know it depends on the school (BU vs. A&M) but I'd really like to know!

They accept >90% instate, so those MCAT ranges are almost exclusively the stats of the instaters. Out of staters need to be in the top % of instaters to be competitive. In most cases, you will be competing for maybe 20 spots per school. If you want hard numbers, I would say having an MCAT of 32+ and a GPA of 3.8+ would be a good start, but ties to Texas is also a necessity.

I had a 4.0, 34 and was interviewed at 3 of the 4 TX schools I applied (UTSW, UTMB, UTHSCSA). I got into UTMB and waitlisted at the other two. I'm out of state and don't necessarily have ties to TX, but I would recommend having a good reason for wanting to go to school at X,Y, or Z. They will be curious during the interview. I would apply to the TX schools again in a heartbeat, and wish you the best of luck. Get the application submitted as soon as you can (i.e. start looking at it now and submit by mid-May or earlier if you have your MCAT).

Hi Sooner,
Sorry to jump on this thread, but when you say to start looking at the application now, is there a way to access it and/or the essay questions? As far as I know, both AMCAS and TMDSAS don't open until early May, and you can't see the questions until then.
Just wondering bc I'd love to start working on it ASAP!

The questions will almost certainly be the same as the ones from last year. You'll find the secondary questions in the relevant threads in the school-specific forum.

A significant portion of the application(s) is just background info and a regurgitation of your transcripts. You should have a general outline prepared of your list of activities with accompanying descriptions for each and how they impacted you. Have your PS ready (~5000 char.) and edited for both - don't edit it on the actual application. For Texas, there's some additional optional essays about what makes you unique and what makes you diverse. I don't remember the char. limits but definitely shorter than the PS for both.

Bottom line is seeing the actual application doesn't really help you get ready. Having the descriptions/essays written beforehand does.

I thought I was able to access the app earlier last year to just look at it, see what was needed, start getting stuff together, etc., but I can't exactly remember… Anyway, if you go to the TMDSAS website, they have all of the important dates and give pretty decent instructions about each section of the application. Good luck!

EDIT: they have a section entitled "Section Overview" that gives really good info, including essay questions, character limits…

I have a 4.0 35 with good ec's and research. I interviewed at uth, utsw, and Baylor. I didn't get an interview at ut-san antonio and turned down an interview at utmb. I was waitlisted at utsw and have not heard back from uth or Baylor.

Probably should not have turned down the utmb interview.

Thanks for all the helpful replies!

Thanks for all of the replies guys! specifically, I'd really like to get into Baylor but I don't know if I have the credentials to do it, but I think Texas would be a good place to be for medical school plus their OOS tuition is less than my in-state tuition. Has anyone gotten into Baylore OOS with a <33 MCAT here?

If I listened to everyone on SDN, I wouldn't have applied to Columbia (too low stats), Brown (mostly non-AMCAS routes), or Baylor (OOS), all of which I got interviews at. I got into Baylor with an unbalanced 33 and waitlisted at the other two. Not a URM.

That makes me pretty pumped, not gonna lie! I'm just going to have to work hard these next 7 weeks til my MCAT and try to pull as high a score as I can!

Baylor takes about 30% OOS, so you can always apply there. I highly recommend that you do. 🙂

Thanks for the encouragement! It means a lot!
