Anyone in Texas have any experience moonlighting for a company called Southwest Medical Associates? They sent me a nice glossy brochure today.

I am interested in "spreading my wings" and making some cash as well, but I have been warned time and time again about "single coverage" situations early in my career. As this company focuses on rural ED's, it seems that single coverage would predominate....

Anyone have any first hand experience with this company in particular?

Thanks in advance!

What's the reason for avoiding single coverage? Too high a risk of something going wrong with all the blame on you (and thus all the liability and legal flak aimed at you)?

I think its more of a "Hey Dr Experienced, I have this cat with this and this... if I do this, does that sound cool with you?"

Anytime we always have someone to lean on (i.e. Attendings) we take for granted those 'little things' that you ask or bounce off someone.... place your self in PoDunk single coverage ED; I would assume you find out how much you miss that realy quick. It could certainly cause some hair to grow on your chest....but I too have heard that tis best to hit some double coverage places first until you simply get in the swing of things as far as acting by yourself.

As far as legal stuff, if there are 10 doctors or just you...if your name is on the chart, it does not matter who else happened to be working that night....

I haven't worked for them. They have several contracts relatively close to me, though. Former residents from my program who have worked there were not at all complementary. They sent out the 'avoid like the plague' comments. Again, this is second hand information, and old second hand at that so things may have changed.

What doesn't appear to have changed, however, is the crappy pay they offer. They were offering a good $30-40/hr less than other similar sized EDs staffed by other groups.

Take care,
Jeff

Thanks for your replies guys. A big turnoff in my book is that apparently at many hospitals you round and do H&P's, Discharges while you are there too. If I wanted to do that crap I'd be a Medicine Resident!

Jeff, can you recommend any good places with good pay in SE/Central Texas?

Thanks again!

What?! I've never even heard of such. I have to cover codes at a small ED I moonlight at, but H&Ps and D/Cs? That sounds crazy. I have started off my moonlighting career in a small single coverage ED and will agree that can be a little scary at times, but I think you defintiely grow as a result of it.
