Its almost that time to finalize rankings for the Feb 1 match!! I was hoping some current students at any of the medical schools in Texas could talk about what they really like and do not like about their respective schools! Also, was there anything you wished you had taken into consideration or any "lessons learned" about your ranking??

Thanks,

I'm UTSW 2008, as is everyone else who posts on that thread with the same name. The school is generally considered to be a pretty strong academic and research center nationally and is actually pretty highly respected among residency directors, which is a big plus for me and my own plans. Preclinical and basic sciences are highly emphasized and takes up the entirety of the first two years, with almost no significant patient interaction until pretty much the very tail end of 2nd year, if that. Something that people may not like is that the school operates on a numerical grading system for almost every class, unlike other schools which can operate on a pure pass/fail basis. The best part of the school for me is that it has top-notch facilities and that people are generally cool.

One thing I learned from the matching process is that if you do not place into your first ranked school, but haven't gotten an outright rejection from them, make sure you call them up and verify which quartile you are in on their waitlist. If you're in the first quartile, it's actually likely you might be admitted later, so don't give up just yet.
