Well, first off, I am a newcomer to this board, so if I happen to repeat questions previously posted, I'd like to apologize in advance.
Now, down to the real stuff..
I am currently a junior transfer at the University of Texas, and due to my transfer I am behind 2-3 semesters in my coursework. My grades are definitely not the best (~2.9 to date), as the adjustment from a small school atmosphere to that of a larger university was somewhat difficult for me to get used to. The GPA should go up considerably over the duration of my schooling though. *fingers crossed*
I have maintained a constant interest in dentistry and have been exposed to it most of my life, since my grandfather is the dentist in my hometown. Over the past year I have decided that this too was the career path that I wanted to pursue.
My question is this...
As a person in my shoes, given my less-than-spectacular GPA to date, how competitive are the Texas schools in general? I have obtained various data sheets on acceptance averages, but sometimes those can be a bit deceptive. Also, does the fact that I have a family member involved in dentistry and my exposure to the field better my chances of acceptance?
Tomorrow I am traveling to SA to visit the campus and meet with the admissions dean, and gather more info from her, but I wanted to pick the brains of you guys on this board, as you all seem very informed on the topic.
I appreciate any information that you all may provide.
