Is it better to hand write thank you letters or is it OK to use a computer and print them???

Thanks

Tradition would dictate hand-writing letters but in this day and age as long as you write one, IMHO it doesn't matter if you type it.

In my opinion....I think typing the letters looks more professional & it's also easier to read.

I would imagine most of the thank you's go into your file at each program...it seems a typed letter would be easier to look at when going through your file at rank time.

Well, in MY opinion, handwritten thank you cards (like the nice ones you can buy in packs from a Hallmark store) look professional while being both thoughtful and personal at the same time. You at least had to take the time to go to the store, buy the cards, and write out each one, instead of just copying and pasting the name of a program into a generic form letter that you mail out everywhere.

But that's just my opinion. If you want to send something, either is fine. I can't imagine that there's any program out there that has a column in their applicant ranking database for handwritten vs typed thank yous.

Does it mean I have to come up with entirely new things to write to each interviewer at the same programs? Each thank you card I write has specific comments tailored to each specific interviewer, but there is similar wording that I use in each card - esp. for the opening and closing. After writing 50+ thank you cards, I got tired of coming up with new openings and closing statements each time and started reusing them. I hope they don't keep all my cards 🙁

I think it's fine to include some similar comments in your thank you's...because after seeing so many programs...you will find similarities that are positives at both places.

I agree with the above poster that handwritten thank you's are personal...BUT I wrote comments specific to each person I interviewed with as well which make my notes personal. I also went out to the store and bought nice thick paper (parchment paper) with matching envelopes...so you can still personalize a type written letter.

There's no right or wrong way!

Thanks so much for your input! 🙂
