So now that everyone is pretty much done with applications... why do you want to be a vet? What's your story?

Good Question. Well, I became interested in vet med after two degrees, kid you not. I chose a degree in Animal Science(B.S), then got a B.S in finance(thought it would be fun to work with money...ha,ha.)and finally made my way to where I belong. I found my purpose in vet med when I started working in wildlife. Its one of those fields that just seemed really cool, and really underserved sometimes. So, I volunteered for a short time, then became employed in the field. I was fortunate to have a hubbie who embraced my interests and said, "go for it." So, over the last few years, I've drifted around in small animal medicine, with an avian specialist, wildlife, and an Er clinic and large animal medicine. Learning from a variety of vets just inspired me to want to learn more. Working in a variety of places helped me come to terms that I belong in wildlife! I couldn't be happier with treating these critters. Its one of those passions that you can stay for hours and not care how long it takes. But, I have to say, that finding my passion took many years. I travelled a lot(over thirty countries...crazy...) and really found who I was and who I wanted to be. As a non traditional, I feel that I really have made a good decision turning my focus towards vet med. Its one of those things that just makes sense. I see myself in the profession for a long time, nomatter where I end up. Its a nice feeling knowing where you truly want to be. I hope all of you have the best of luck and happiness in this field. Its such an awesome thing to do! Cheers to all the applicants and future applicants. We all deserve a huge round of applause for making it this far! 😍

Short version...pre-vet undergrad (biochemistry/molecular biology)...undergrad research project inspires me...grades are good enough for vet school but probably not dvm/phd...I choose to do phd and maybe come back to dvm...phd goes off without a hitch and I become VERY interested in comparative oncology...I refresh my clinical hours and remember why I love this profession... hopefully the rest is history =o)

Hmm... where to start. I have always had an interest in medicine and I have always loved animals! The medicine part because I was diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic at 1 year old. When I was little I loved going to the zoo and reading learning about animals. I had tons of pets over the years etc. In middle school I thought.."Hey I should be a vet! Wait no I am too dumb to be a doctor." So I didn't really decide *finally* to be a vet until my junior year of high school when I went to the info day for my college. I loved all of the classes that had to do with animal physiology, medicine etc. Right then I no matter what it took I would get into vet school and become the best vet I could be! It has been a long road already (Organic Chemistry was not my friend!) but I am happy to say I have never wavered in my commitment and will keep trying until I make it!😳

Just kidding! Thought we may be able to use some humor about this time of year. I all seriousness, do have zero regrets about being 33 and a non-trad and where I've been, what I've done. I just now am getting to it b/c my dad (and me ex-husband) always told me I was too stupid to do it, so it held me back. But that's why I have an ex and no longer speak to the parternal 23.

For me, it's been something brewing over the past 7-8 years that I just haven't been able to ignore. I wanted to be a doctor and then an engineer growing up, but I kept coming back to animal-related activities in my spare time. It finally clicked in my head that I could do medicine-slash-hard-core-science AND work with animals if I became a vet! It was daunting to leave a cush job and start working in the veterinary field, but hopefully it will all pay off 🙂
