Curious to know what the community thinks and regards as excellent psychiatry programs that aren't the traditional Columbia's, Cornell's and Hopkins of the world. My time to shine on ERAS is coming soon and I am hopeful for excellent training; it's all too easy to get lost in the rankings and names. Please share your wisdom and knowledge!

I think the reason that you're not getting a lot of responses is that...there are diamonds and there's the rough. It's definitely possible for prestigious programs to be quite malignant. I think the reverse might be less common.

I didn't go there, but a decade ago UN Reno seemed like a solid training program with good people, but not the flashy brand. I'd assume there are many regional academic centers across the country that are excellent for training, and maybe better work life balance and faculty support than mega health system in major metro with huge cost of living

I was reasonably impressed by University of Louisville when I interviewed there c. 2015, to add to the theme of "solid training program at regional academic center with good work/life balance and very low COL."

Check out UPMC. Try to get an audition/Sub-I early on if you can. I’m just an M4 but was super impressed with their facilities and didactics.

UPMC is one of the best psychiatry programs in the country, or maybe on Earth. It's only lacking in name brand recognition to people who don't know the program or are not psychiatrists.

Have you looked through this spreadsheet for current applicants? It's a real mine of information (appropriate if you're looking for gems hehe)

In the tab for residents to comment on their programs, University of New Mexico was getting a lot of love and getting hyped up as a hidden gem

Idk why this is posting as an actual spreadsheet and not a link but here's a second try with a hyperlink

Thanks for contributing so far! This process is very difficult as there are both too many institutions and too little. There are only so many programs that offer the magic sauce and simultaneously so many programs which offer the same thing; it's hard to ever really know what differentiates programs from one another and I most certainly don't want it to be an entirely geographic decision.

There are far more good psychiatry programs than bad, the odds are generally stacked in your favor. Almost every flagship university academic program is good in the entire country, almost every powerhouse top 50 university has a good program. Many community programs are solid to very good. I would not go into this with a scarcity mindset, it's more about avoiding any occasional landmine than finding the Scarlet Johansson in the rough.
