THC clinical research stigma?

Hi all! I'm a first-year DO student and am looking to get involved in research. I have a few different labs I'm looking at, but I recently had an opportunity come up regarding a clinical study examining THC and neuropathic pain. There's a high likelihood I'd be able to get published, for at least a case study and possibly other projects. However, I'm worried that some PDs may have a stigma against this type of research. Is this accurate?

My other options would be basic science research. I've found multiple labs I'm interested in, with subject matter I care about. I could present at a conference or symposium, but bench research is much harder to publish.

Right now, I'm thinking about doing academic IM, and want to make myself a competitive applicant. I'd love to do research, but I want to make sure that I won't face consequences for the type of research I'm choosing to do. Thank you!

Would not attempt basic science research unless you take an actual research year to do so. I don't think this necessarily carries a stigma, and if this is your only option and you find the research interesting then I'd go for it.

I dont think there will be any issue with a THC focused research project. I think you should just do what interests you

Summer break between 1st and 2nd year is a the best time for a student to do research. Go for it.

As someone who has neuropathic pain myself, THC needs to be investigated as a treatment.

No. This is biomedical research in 2024, not middle school health class in 1984.
