Hey, is there any sort of gold standard textbook for general chem?

Sorta like Campbell for Biology, where it seems like everyone uses it for undergrad??

I need to pick one up anyways and my old one was garbage, IMHO.

Thanks for any advice.

If you're looking for a good general chemistry textbook, use General Chemistry by Charles E. Mortimer. You can buy it dirt cheap on amazon.

I'm not sure if its a "gold standard" per say, but it'll get the job done. Zumdahl, Chemistry. I'm pretty sure a lot of colleges use it too. And you might be able to pick up an older edition from half.com for a few bucks too.

I hear a lot about Campbell for bio...does anyone use freeman for bio in their undergrad? IMO it's a really good book (but I am curious how Campbell stacks up against it).

I remember I also liked my general chem book written by Zumdahl (5e)...I think the 6th edition is out now but I don't think it's worth spending extra money on a new edition.

Thank you.

That was the plan, just to spend literally a couple dollars on half or amazon.

Appreciate it.

Campbell's is awesome! I only wish i had it for undergrad. Its clear and concise. The ADA recommends it as a reference book.I borrowed mine from the local library and when it was time to give it back i renewed it online so have had it for a month now and will return it as soon as i am done next week.Be sure to check the public lib. before you purchase one .

Campbells is better than the Freeman book. No comparison in my opinion.

However, for DAT biology, sometimes even campbells isn't enough. A good anatomy and physiology book will be very useful.

Anatomy and Physiology by Elaine Marieb is a good book.

So you purchased campbells just for the DAT?

No, I purchased it when I took bio at uw. For some reason, I didn't like the campbell book. A few others in the class ended up going w/ campbells as well.

I bought an older edition from 1999 for about 10 bucks.

Check out those used bookstores on the AVE...they're untapped gold mines. You should also hit up half-price books in the u-district...all untapped gold mines. Dirt cheap books.

I mean freeman book...

You used campbell instead of freeman for the bio180-220 series? Must've been weird since most teachers go off the freeman book and base their lectures outta there...and the syllabus of all bio teachers I know refer to the freeman readings. I imagine it must've been kind of annoying jumping from chapter to chapter?
