The Countdown

ooh, when are we going to start the post your ROL thread?? 😀

I made a list based on gut instinct... and keep saying that I'm going to look through the information packets one more time before the deadline, just to make sure I'm not missing anything major that would move a program up or down my list... but I have a feeling that realistically I'm not going to do that...

Does anyone know - are programs' rank lists due the same day ours are? I have heard conflicting things on that.

I believe they are due the same time.

I'm getting all excited now. I certified last week and will probably not change my list. All the changes I made before were with the lower part of my list.

Waiting is so hard!

Has anyone else started relying on silly superstitions ("if __ happens I'll have good luck in the match") or am I the only neurotic one? Who knew streetlights and clocks could hold so much power. 😛

I tried to get a friend to link his pediatric cardiology fellowship match to the outcome of an SEC basketball game today. He wouldn't budge.

I'm excited, too!
I have finally stopped changing my rank list, so now it's just a waiting game.

I discovered that you can go to freida and find out how many people your programs interviewed last year. (Just look up the program info and then look under general information.)

My number one program only interviewed 6.4 people per spot last year. That gives me a better chance than the 10 to 1 I expected!
Yay, Statistics help pass the time!

I've never noticed this before and thanks for the tip! It's interesting to see most places hover between 40-90, but some places are really, really low... one I saw only interviewed 15 for 5 spots. They must have confidence in matching a third of those interviewees or they couldn't get anyone out to interview... or they're so bottom-of-the-barrel that they think those people won't match anywhere else... I don't know. I short, there's really nothing that this tells us, but it's great to speculate 🙂

During our research we noted that programs that tend to interview fewer candidates per spot also seem to have more IMG's. So I wonder if they interview less because they expect pre-matches...

Do they offer prematches to mostly IMGs, or AMGs too? I think a fair question would be is if they do, would an average AMG applicant applying to a mostly IMG program end up having to choose between prematch or no match with that program? I hope that question makes sense.

An even bigger consideration is allopathic AMG ms4s who apply to these programs. If there are 60 people being interviewed, the program has 5 slots, and they usually prematch 3, well that would in effect by a 30/1 ratio since the non-DO AMG can't even get in on the prematch.

One program I interviewed now has 1 slot open. I wouldn't have spent so much money getting there if I would have known they would prematch 80% of their slots.

Yeah, I forgot that DO's can pre-match too. We wouldn't really know the answer to that question as my wife is an allopathic student so it's not something we spent much time investigating.

But like psychotrope said the pre-matches can change the equation for interviews vs. spots. Hard to know if some of the spots are filled with pre--matches which makes the ratio worse for the allo applicants.

actually, I think you can figure out how many prematches a place has offered/filled. You look at the total number of spot available (say from last years nrmp fill list, assuming stable #of spots) then use the nrmp program. You search for programs say all psych in California and see all the programs appear. It will show how many spots they are offering for pgy1 through the match. So you just do the subtraction and that gives you the number of prematches.

By the way, does anyone know what info programs can see about our ROL AFTER the match? Can they see our whole rank list or only what number they were ranked?

Don't they list all of their open spots in FREIDA anyway and then the pre-matches decrease the available spots? I'm not sure the programs can predict how many pre-matches they expect before they interview the candidates (I'm sure some can based on past history) ... what if they get a particularly strong batch of allo candidates that are interested in their program?

Doesn't seem logical to reduce the number of spots available for allo's before you even interview anyone.

Or maybe I'm misinterpreting what you're saying.

I'm pretty sure they can only see where you matched. They can't see what number they were or what number the program you matched at was.

Actually in the nrmp program, the PDs don't finalize the number of spot offered in the match until the end of January. So if the find 3 great prematches the can reduce the number of spots offered. So look at Frieda for total number of spots and the nrmp program for the number up for grab in the match ( number finalized in late Jan)

Ah, very cool. I see what you mean now. Thankfully none of our top schools took an pre-matches. Very helpful.

It's not going by fast enough. I'm more excited about the match than I am for Christmas or my birthday!

2 days for the rank list
24 days for the match!

There's a street by my apartment with the name of my #2 program. I keep trying to tell myself it's pure coincidence.... 🙂

I just want rank lists to be over so that all this silly pre-submission-deadline emailing, phone calls, etc, can stop. I wish we did our match like Urology!

My husband has a job interview in the town of my #1 choice. I'll take it as a sign even though he doesn't hear about the job until AFTER the match.

Less than three hours to certify!
22 Days until the match

Yup, coming up are going to be 3 of the longest weeks of my life 😛 How to keep our minds occupied elsewhere until then...World of Warcraft? 😀

Wow, that video cannot be real, there must be some kind of special-effects trickery to it. For that many things to be planned out that perfectly...I dunno. In any event, 14 more days! I'll either be very happy or kinda sad, there is very little middle ground 😛

Actually, there was quite a discussion about it here, and it is all a single take (though apparently after several failed attempts). I guess this band is known more for its videos than its music...

If we're posting mindless distractions, then here's what's been making me the giddiest the last couple of days. Album out next week.

Clearly metaphoric for the Match process, in which the initial pursuer, representing medical school, is vanquished, only to be replaced by the far fiercer residency PD, intent on shooting down the hopes and dreams of the eager interns and ultimately launching them into the hitherto unknown abyss.
😀

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

ugh. sometimes a little screaming relieves the stress. that felt good...:scared:

only a little over a week left.

may we all match well!

A little scream therapy, noonday? 🙂

It's fun to see everyone's rank lists. I can't wait to see where we all end up!

Ugh...this week is crawling by. March 18 can't come fast enough.

I know!! I keep wearing my Dan&Whit's t-shirt in hopes I will get some Dartmouth love in 10 days. Excruciating!

Yeah, we're in "capstone" right now, which is classroom stuff to prepare for residency. On the plus side, we're out early every day. On the downside, we have tons of free time and no good distractions.

That actually sounds like a good class to have, I wish my school had something like that. I guess I'm pretty busy studying neurology this month, but I'm finding it very difficult to concentrate this week 😛

I'll be in the MICU next week, which I picked on purpose to decrease the amount of downtime/no good distractions. That said, I think I used up all my neurotic reserves last week, and am actually feeling calm (dare I say zen?) about next week. Of course, who knows if it will last.... 😀

I have vacation next week, so no good distractions for me. Luckily I'm kind of busy this week (the 4th year type of busy where I'm working about 40 hrs), which is helping. And my friend is planning our match week festivities, so I've gotten sucked into some obsessiveness about that.

Post some You tube videos! I always enjoy seeing what other people recommend.
