Hi all,

How about a list of programs that have already given rejections. I think may of us are curious about this information, so to assess where we stand on programs that 1) have offered interviews, but 2) we haven't heard from.

So, my information gathering so far reveals the following list:

1) UNC (from previous post)
2) UMiami (from previous post)
3) Fox Chase (personal experience)

any others?

classmate of mine called MD Anderson and was told that they have basically offered the 28 interview positions. so I guess in this case no news is bad news.

1) UNC
2) UMiami
3) Fox Chase
4) Emory
5) U Chicago
6) Stanford
7) Allegheny
8) U Kansas
9) Med College Wisconsin

If this list is truly it so far, then it's somewhat of a good sign, cuz there's plenty of programs that I haven't heard from (and I'm sure other people as well).

another one...

Wash U is also done giving interviews.

1) UNC
2) UMiami
3) Fox Chase
4) Emory
5) U Chicago
6) Stanford
7) Allegheny
8) U Kansas
9) Med College Wisconsin
10) MD Anderson

official "ding" just came in e-mail.

Adding on:

11) Yale
12) Kaiser (Pasadena)

13) Tufts

...also, did anyone experience this ridiculousness? U of Arizona offered way more interview offers than they intended to actually interview? I was told that they already filled all of their interview slots by the time I replied (on the very same afternoon that I received the email!). I can't believe I'm on the waitlist of people already offered interviews!

That's totally poor form. Even worse, there this 1 program (won't name which) who interviewed 30 people for 1 spot and it was rumored that that spot was pretty much held for someone from their med school...waste of time and money for those interviewees.

How about this one? U Chicago sent me a rejection by email with someone else's name on it, then immediately followed it with another email saying I should diregard it, and then followed 6 hrs later with a rejection with my name on it.

There's something to be said about programs that won't be flexible with their interview dates too. I can understand that a program wants you to be very interested in them and wants you to cancel other interviews for them, but what if you have 2 programs in your top 5 that will only interview on the same day? Frankly there's not enough information out there to make a decision before you interview. And let's flip the logic: If the program doesn't give you an option, then how interested can they be in recruiting YOU to their program? I guess sometimes you're just a number... but maybe it's a clue to the overall flexibility of the program (?)

Does that qualify as a ramble?

Joe

Hey Joe

I'm totally there with you on the U Chicago "ding."

I have not had conflicting interview dates yet, and have luckily been able to schedule everyone who has invited me. (despite being out of the country for like a week in January -- hot interview season). But I've heard concerns similar to yours, about the inflexibility (is that a word?) of some/many programs in terms of interview dates. I guess it's a buyer's market right now -- each program has multiple super-qualified applicants for each spot. If they can cut down on the numbers simply by applicants not being able to interview at certain dates... that just eliminates the length of debates that have to go on during committee meetings. Each program still will get awesome residents out of the pool and Match.

I guess if one has 30-40 interview offers, they are bound to conflict in dates, eh - Joe? Just kidding 🙂

All of this just emphasizes that the power is all in the hands of the programs. Forget what people say that the Match works in students' favor. In Rad Onc at least, it's the other way around.

Couldn't agree with you more - exactly the same scenario happened to me with U of Chicago. That's such poor form, it's ridiculous.

I also agree with the U of Arizona thing - I emailed back literally the second I saw it appear in my email box (I happened to actually be checking my email at the time), and it was too late. What is this, a radio call-in show? 20th caller gets free tickets to Supertramp? Either offer me an interview or don't - I'm frustrated enough as it is that I don't need the piss-poor errors of program coordinators ruining my already stressful days...

I think THAT qualifies as a rant. Had to get it out, though. Programs just show so little respect to the applicants, it's sad.

well the matching algo does favor the student- but that doesnt promise you that they will make the other parts of the process (ie the interview) favorable to you. that has nothing to do with the algorhythm. Does the match itself opposed to say free-marketing provide a favorable situation to the resident or not? I dont think anyone can really say; it probably depends upon how competitive the field is. But that's a nother thread.

Am I the only one getting dinged here?

Has anyone heard from NCI, Georgetown or U Maryland yet? Either an invite or a GFY/ding?

My friend who's a resident at Georgetown says they have not offered anything yet...probably still reviewing

No, Thaiger75, you're not the only one. But you do beat us all to the punch/wimper.

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks now, but I finally registered to post. There have been some great discussions here, and I've really enjoyed reading the posts. Keep it up!

Regarding Maryland:

A couple of weeks ago I was checking out the ADTS information for the programs I had applied to, and noticed that parts of the application to U. Maryland were downloaded in duplicate (some >5x!). No other programs did that, so I gave them a call to make sure everything was okay. The program coordinator first assured me that my application was okay, then told me "we've offered interviews to everyone already." I'm going to count that as a ding. <g>

I know you can still hope if you haven't heard from a program yet, but call me crazy, I'd still rather have an official rejection than be just left hanging there.

Regarding Randomness:

Also, I've decided that there is a certain level of randomness in the interview offer process. My good friend and I co-authored a poster/presentation, are very similar on paper, and applied to many of the same programs. Suprisingly, there have been at least a handful of programs that have offered an interview to one of us and not the other, without any obvious trend toward competitiveness. I think that when it really comes down to it, that statement in the rejection letters about "there are so many great applications. . .blah, blah. . .but could only offer interviews to a few. . .blah, blah" is probably really true. I think it must be really hard to distinguish between a pool of highly competitive applicants, and at the end of the day, they have to make a decision which may just be based on a few minor things that help set that applicant apart (i.e. my friend's an avid runner, and I'm an avid sit-on-my-ass-er). <grin>

Other Misc Info:

1. The spot at SUNY Downstate was taken outside the match. Heard this from the guy who took it. Yeah, I didn't get a call either.
2. U. Pittsburgh has "just started really reviewing the applications" per the program coordinator.
3. Do you think Santa will give me a residency position if that's what I want for Christmas? Hopefully he won't be burned by the menorah I have laying out next to the cookies and milk.

Sorry for the early morning rant. Must get coffee.
