Yep, it's that time of year again- time to decide what to buy for H&P. My school does *not* have oto/ophthalmoscopes everywhere in the hospital, from what I've seen (other NJMSers correct me if I'm wrong). So I'll have to buy them. My question: Are the pocket sets adequate? I'm definitely not interested in the pan-optic, if only because I HATE having heavy things in my pockets (I worked for a derm for 2 years and one of my main fxns was carrying his heavy light around! Yes, a HEAVY light in derm... That is, until a rep gave him one light enough to carry around in his own pocket...) And is there really a huge difference btwn Welch-Allyn and other companies?

As for steths, I already got a Cardio III for clinic.

I'll definitely spring for everything else, cuz hammers and forks aren't that expensive.

Wow, from the title of your thread I thought you were going to ask about something else entirely.

But perhaps I just have a dirty mind. 😀

Assuming they don't need them. Like someone pointed out in another thread, hospitals in the inner city (which ours is) are more likely to NOT have them in the rooms. I'm checking into it, but just in case...

my advice...

Forget about the oto/ophthalmoscope. You will NEVER, EVER use it. I bought one because I thought I'd need it, and you NEVER do. If you are at a hospital where there are no scopes in the room, I don't think its that important to check the fundus (how often do you do that in clincals anyway?). Check the pupillary stuffs with a small pocket flashlight. If you are being tested, just borrow one from some stupid schmuck who actually bought one...like me!:hardy:

Just pretend you see the retina and all of the arteries. Then say, "yes attending, I can appreciate the optic cupping and neovascularization."

I don't even put the stethescope in my ears when I'm on the floors. I just hold the bell up to the chest and nod.
