thank you for your time.

I have much love for all er doctors and nurses and emt's😍

Well, people shouldn't go to the hospital for "flu" anyway. Young healthy people recover nearly 100% of the time without problem. There's nothing we can do for them any way.

I agree. I my self had signs of Pneumonia ( have had it before) I called my doctor he saw me and I had bronchitis instead. I would never think about going to the er for the flu.

My experience as a ED tech in a Phoenix Metro community hospital before med school consisted of many elderly visitors to our warm winter (Snow Birds) plugging the ED. The flu, a cold or pneumonia were all extra scarry for the older population and so they would frequent the ED a lot more. ED's in Arizona in the winter are packed! Commonly we had 36hr waits at times during the colder months and could be holding patients for two days in our beds. For one week in 2006 we averaged <15% of our 29 beds were available due to all the pts we were holding b/c the floors were full.

Other than the epidemics that have killed thousands of people in the past.

The last one (in this country) was in 1918. They had a particularly poor understanding of disease processes, hygiene and no antibiotics. My guess would be that if a 1918 flu hit today we'd still not be able to do much about it.

I remember an episode of South Park where SARS hit the town. One of the characters said after contracting SARS: "I only have a 98% chance of living".

I was just being contrarian for no good reason anyway. The scarier thing about flu season to me is the opportunity to miss some other illness under guise of "flu"

Bingo.

That (and the dreaded Press Ganey scores) are why you stay in the room with the patient after the initial 30 seconds it took you to dx 'flu'.

Take care,
Jeff

sometimes I think to my self do I want to go to the doctor for just a flu then say no. I do understand people that are visting and are really sick and of course the old and very young. but what I do not understand is if you live here why not call your doctor or go to and after hours care or just wait and see if it goes a way.

I have seen people go in for a minor thing and think just go to your doctor there are people that need the ED more then you right now.
