Interesting! I may be biased, but I say go for it. Though I wasn't required to take the GRE for Edinburgh, I took it for US schools anyway so it wouldn't have been hard to just send them a copy of my scores. I hadn't heard that they were starting to require it, but it may be a trend for the UK schools as they get more US applicants... I noticed RVC started requiring GRE scores last cycle and even wanted Biology GRE scores (which they actually ended up not requiring due to the limited number of testing times or something). Good luck! 🙂

I think sometimes it's hard for them to understand the American grading scheme, for many reasons, but I like that RVC and now Edinburgh requires the GRE. Not that I like it or did extremely well, but I like that hopefully it'll bring some standardization of our grades to their team to compare on a more equal basis. The same person can get a 4.0 in one school and a 3.0 in another based on many factors, so I think it's awesome that they recognize that they need something else to 'grade' American student's performance from a standardized point of view. Or that's my thinking 🙂 Still don't like the GRE haha I personally think vet schools should require a GRE based on a science (bio, biochem, chem, physics, whatever) as opposed to the regular one, well for reasons we don't have to get into haha.

I agree, i think it gives a better basis of comparison however im just glad I didn't have to take it 🙂

I am totally going to go for it. I am just so surprised I haven't heard any mention of this. It feels like it was swept under the rug

so pissed about RVC not requiring GRE Bio anymore...i'm planning on applying this upcoming cycle and since the test is only offered in Nov & April, i already signed up and am suppose to take it April 9th. **** mate...jsut wasted a bunch of money....

oh the bright side, hopefully i can do uber awesome on it and it'll make up for my crappy freshman Bio 1 & 2 grades of a C+! haha

I'm going to pretend that I didn't read this... I SWORE their website still said they wanted the GRE Biology. Perhaps those applying for 2012 entry will need it?

I don't mind taking the test, but it's at 8 AM on Saturday and the closest testing center is at least 1.5 hours away. ARGH

Curry,

The website says they want it, but it's not required. I got accepted into the 4-year accelerated BVetMed and I only took the regular GRE 🙂 So no worries if you haven't scheduled it, but you'll definitely need the regular GRE, but the reg version is offered like, almost everyday of the month; much more available than the Bio GRE

Definitely check with the school and don't take my word for it! They may have found a way to make it work and require it again for this cycle. All I know is that last cycle they had it on their website as a requirement so I signed up for it and then found out it had "disappeared" from their website... so then I emailed them to see if it was still needed and they told me no. By then I had already paid for it and I wasn't really prepared enough, so I ate the cost of that test and decided it wasn't worth the stress of taking it. But again, check with what they want now.

Does Edinburgh require Organic Chemistry? Or just Gen Chem?

Yes, they do require Orgo and Biochem for that matter. Trust me it will prepare you if you decide to come here.

Thanks! Do you know if they list specific course requirements anywhere on their website? All I found was that we should have high Chemistry grades, (and if that's all they look at academically, I'll never get in...) and meet certain gpa cut-offs.

This still doesn't give details about what exactly they want, but I found it useful for getting to know the school a bit better. http://www.aavmc.org/data/files/vmcas/descriptors/edinburgh%202012%20posted.pdf

Also it looks like the RVC isn't requiring the GRE anymore, http://www.aavmc.org/data/files/vmcas/descriptors/royal%20descriptor%202012%20posted.pdf I didn't see it on here nor here: http://www.aavmc.org/data/files/vmcas/test%20chart_2012_final.pdf

I got all these from the aavmc.org website.

RVC DOES require the GRE, but the do NOT require the subject test.

I took it on Sept 28th this year and had my scores sent to RVC.

I would email the school for a specific list. When I had applied the list was on the AAVMC website but its no longer there sadly. I do know they don't require Physics 2, however, things might have changed.

I actually already took the regular GRE in August, and am signed up for the Biology GRE in a month. I think I'll go through with it anyhow b/c my backup plan is a master's program, which likes seeing the scores.

Thanks for the info though 🙂

I'm just grumpy that it's not actually required anymore. I think it makes sense b/c RVC has no clue how our colleges measure up against each other.

I just sent them an email about their specific class requirements. I'll post what they send for anyone else interested in applying.

Awesome! Please let us know 🙂

I found this today: This doesn't show the GRE, so hopefully it is up to date!

The requirements list from VMSAR is more extensive than that chart. It's certainly possible that they significantly decreased the requirements, but I kind of doubt that. They do state that this is the bare minimum to be considered, and those applying for the 4-year program will need a science-based degree.

Organic Chem w/ lab
Biochemistry
Math or Stats
Principles of Bio
Physics w/ lab
General bio, animal bio, or zoology w/lab

Awesome thanks!!! I keep meaning to buy the manual 😛

It's pretty awesome 🙂 I write all over mine with comments about the schools and complaints about prereqs (lol). I probably won't purchase the updated version for next application cycle though because all of the information is available online (with a little searching) so I will just confirm requirements for the schools I actually apply to. Some of the pictures are hilarious though! there's one for OkSU where the vet & 2 students are standing around a lit table in the dark. It probably looks cool in color... but it's just silly in b&w.

.... and now I really need to log off of SDN and actually complete my real hw.
