I have been following the story of the Heparin contamination since I learned about it from my home health nurse a bit back but I have yet to find out what exactly this contaminant is and I'm really curious! I've scoured the net and have yet to find anything...does anyone on here know,is it being held secret or is it just not known or not classified?

(sorry if this is the wrong section for this post!)

The company that's in trouble is baxter pharmaceuticals it's a quite well known company and my division uses them quite a bit. We even had some of their heparin for animal studies I was doing and I personally used some of it. To no adverse effects. Anyway the story is Baxter doesn't make it all themselves they hire out to subcontractors in china (cuz it's cheaper) Anyway Chinese laboratories didn't clean up their samples as much as they needed to. Heparin is prepared from pig intestines and of course there's a lot of protein purification and I imagine some affinity chromatography involved since this is done a lot. Anyway China has lower standards of evaluation of pharmaceuticals especially those being sent out over seas. Anyway that's the stories it probably has some by product from pig intestines or it had some infectious agent in it. Anyhow the real agent of contamination isn't know because each vial and lot number is has passed hands several times even the subcontractor in China contracted out to even small and cheaper production facilities. So that's pretty much all of it.
