i went to graduate school with a sub 3.0.. I graduated that with a 3.5. Like you, undergrad didn't go the way I wanted due to illness of a child. It was difficult to explain it but I did.. I am now going to retake some prereqs I got Cs in the first time, then apply DO/ URM MD pathway programs.

I would continue with your path( its the one I am on now). Even though your school has an SMP I would encourage you to reach out to other programs to see what they are interested in grades wise.. I will say that if you want MD, stay at the undergrad level since grad classes wont raise your GPA.

I would say also volunteer and improve your non academic life as well..

You are on the right track and I especially like your mindset.

There are several routes to take. The easiest would be to re-take all F/D/C science classes and use AACOMAS' grade replacement policy, which does wonders for your GPAs. Get them to ~3.2-3.4 and you're fine for any DO program, presuming you can do well on MCAT.

For MD programs, I recommend an SMP, preferably one given at a medical school. Doing well here shows us you can handle medical school, and it's a back door into that school in particular.

These programs are a dime a dozen, so do your homework to find one.

Good luck!

Today is officially my last day of undergrad (last day of summer session). I'll be finishing my degree in Biology with a 2.8. Definetly not where I planned to be 4 years ago. I clearly know where I went wrong in college, I was involved in Greek life as well as NCAA athletics so and I made the choice to balance that with academics.

This last spring and summer semester made me realize that my low gpa is due to my social life and collegiate commitments. I took a step back from both these last 2 semesters and my GPA was well above the my previous 7 semesters (Deans list for the first time since freshman year). I always wanted to pursue medicine and trust me if I knew I would have turned out this way I would not have tried to balance multiple commitments. Fortunately though I've been able to gain some experiences.

I know its going to be difficult but I plan to raise my GPA to be competitive enough for Med school. I plan to enroll back this fall as a Non-degree student and take whatever upper level science classes I can fit in my schedule. I've landed a full time job with a large ophthalmology practice so my classes will be limited to night ones. Hopefully after a year if I can raise my BCMP above a 3.0 apply for the SMP my school offers. Then Med school the year after.

I've tried talking with advisers at my school but they don't seem to entertain any notions of graduate school for anyone with a <3.0gpa. It was kinda disheartening when I tried. But needless to say it wouldn't stop me. I just wanted to get some feedback and some suggestions on what I can do. Am I on the right track??
