Just got my pin and submitted my rank list of oms programs.
I had to cancel my visit to Denver for family reasons. Merry Christmas!

Dude! Can you believe its almost that time??? I've already submitted my first list and gone in and changed it once so far 🙂, hopefully for the last time. I finished my last interview at Parkland/Texas Southwestern just last week...I think I gained 15 pounds from all the fast food, schmooze dinners, and rushed times over the past couple of months....just finished putting a tricycle together for my kid a few minutes ago...I mean Santa just did...Hope all's well in the great white north!!

So, does anyone want to discuss those illegal/legal contacts that some are receiving or shall we wait until after the match? Some are defientantly benign, such as the letters/emails. But I know some calls have been very specific.

I made up my list just now, and might submit it tomorrow. I anticipate at least three changes, hopefully not much more. Good luck everyone.

I found my applicant code & pin # and just finished submitting my list for phase II. Seeing as I didn't match in phase I, I'm not sure what to think anymore for phase II (I submitted more ranks for phase I than I just did for phase II). I feel like this whole match thing is based on luck more than anything else.

I know you guys are all OMS applicants. Did you apply to any GPRs or interview with them as "backups?" If you did, did you tell the programs about your OMS applications as well, like when they ask the "Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?"

omfsapplicant, I'm curious about any "dirty match" stories you may have. I heard about a few incidents during my ortho interviews, but I didn't really believe it. But my friends have came back from GPR interviews where they were told "If you want us, write/call/come back to visit." I haven't gotten any "we really want you" offers, but I sure would like to be on someone's "we want you bad" list for the upcoming match and definitely when I reapply to ortho next year.

Now back to holding my breath till Jan. 26...

Nah, I'm leaving OMS to the guys above. I'm entering phase II for GPR programs. Phase II is for all applicants to GPR, AEGD, Pedo, & OMS. Phase I is Ortho only; anyone not matching in Phase I is still eligible to match in any phase II program.

The reason I ask about OMS applicants applying to any GPR programs is that any applicants to Pedo & OMS looking to do a GPR as a backup (if they don't get Pedo or OMS) have to interview for GPR at the same time as their specialty interviews & rank GPR programs on the same list as Pedo or OMS.

I personally did not apply to any GPRs. I know during my interviews that many of the applicants at the time were doing GPRs. The best thing to do with any interview is be honest and state your intentions. Everybody knows that a GPR is essentially an extra year of practice to let you find yourself and make yourself a better candidate for whatever specialty you are applying for. Most applicants that I have met are pretty candid about their goals.
If I don't get matched to an oms program, the most likely route that I would take is probably an intern position if it becomes available at an oms site. An oms internship is 12 months of oral surgery experience versus a GPR which is usually just 3 months.
Another problem that was brought up to me was that because GME funds the GPR position, if an applicant applied to a 4 year program he/she essentially only has 3 years of GME funding remaining and the OMS program has to pay for the resident out of their "own" funds. As a result if 2 applicants are identical the oms program would take the student fresh out of school versus the GPR applicant.
I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that I get matched!

I applied to 13 programs, was invited to 9 and interviewed at 7. I did not send any thank you letters out. If any residents/faculty are out there and recognize me here's a big THANK YOU!🙂

I wish I was offered a prematch! It's quite stressful not knowing where I'll end up next year. What turned out to be a 4 year voyage may end up being 8 years! (dental and oms)

I heard about this too at one of my ortho interviews. However, after I didn't match, I looked into it further to make sure doing a GPR wouldn't hurt me in reapplying or if I'd be better off doing a year of private practice. Basically, since GME is gone for most ortho programs, it shouldn't make a difference to those programs. Lots of programs want people straight out, but there are also programs that will consider you seriously only if you've done a GPR or some post-grad training. Some of the hospital based ortho programs will pay you as a PGY-2 in your first year of ortho residency if you come to them having already done a PGY-1 as a GPR somewhere. That's a good deal; I'd imagine it's the same for OMS. Think about it, a lot of those students you met currently doing a GPR are probably going to match into OMS, so there are probably a good number of programs where having done a PGY-1 somewhere doesn't matter to the program b/c they can probably classify you as a PGY-2. Our 6 year OMS program here has accepted students who have done GPRs. But there are probably those programs where they will lose money, so oh well, we'll steer clear of those.

Just finishing off my thank you letters. This is insane. They've probably made their match lists already, but hopefully it can't hurt at this point, seeing as all the other candidates from my school are sending thank you notes.

Todays the last day to make those changes. I submitted my list a couple of days ago and have not changed it yet. I made my decisions soley on gut feeling, no stats, ect. involved. I hope that wasn't a mistake. I thing that is the only way to do it. There is no way to know anyway in only a day or two.

MAXFAC-- it doesn't look like we ran into each other on the interview trail, though I don't know which Boston program you inerviewed at. I was at MGH.

Did everyone rank all the programs they interviewed at? I did, but some of my class mates did not.

Two letters, two emails, and two phone calls, unfortunately none of them were my top choices.

I actually made my decision putting numbers and gut on equal grounds 🙂. Only about 1/2 of the programs would give clear numbers, so the 1/2 that didn't are all at the bottom of my list...I don't think that all programs that don't show numbers are trying to hide something, but I do think some of them are...

I did end up ranking all my programs though...12 in all...

2 letters, 2 emails, 1 phone call, and 1 of them was my top choice...but you always wonder if they write/email/call more people than spots avail. and have similiar conversations...

Besides UPENN, I didn't interview at any other schools in the northeast. I interviewed at Parkland on day 1.

I rankeded them all.

I didn't interview at USC, LIJ, UW, Monti.,

I think I met River13 on the circuit.

omfsapplicant...were you at Parkland on day 1? Did we have a conversation about me not having voicemail on my cell phone? Maybe that was someone else who did a lot of the same interviews as us.

Good luck omfsapplicant, sounds like you will match somewhere. This week undoubtedly will be long. I'm just glad graduation is rolling around the corner. Just passed Part 2 boards and now I have to get prepped for the Canadian NDEB exam.
It sure would be cool to know for sure what I'll be doing next year now!

jtluk - just use the old exams from www.ndeb.ca - the exam is basically the same thing.
