Okay. I just got off the phone with AMCAS and have learned something very interesting. I now know why some people with later active dates are being verified before people with earlier active dates. Are you ready for this?
Supposedly, according to the AMCAS worker I spoke to, what they do is divide the last names into groups of letters. For example A-C, D-F, G-I, etc. A worker is assigned to verifying a single group of letters. They go in the order of active date, but only within a group of letters.
So the difference in verification times can occur if a worker has a group of letters that include fewer applications and/or is a faster worker. Let's say he or she is assigned to group A-C. He or she can blast through all the applications and make it so the people are only waiting 3-4 weeks after they're active to be verified.
If you're unlucky and are in a different group of letters where there are a lot of applications and/or the worker assigned to your group is slow, then you might be waiting the full 5-6 weeks (like I have been.)
So what shouldn't be happening is two people with the same starting letter of their last names getting verified out of order (i.e. the person with the later active dating being verified before the person with the earlier one.) I hope this eases the minds of some of those like me who have been waiting 5+ weeks.
