This is a society for community college students, and I just got my invitation in the mail. I'm already a member of Phi Theta Kappa (toted as the CC version of Phi Beta Kappa). This society, like others claims to offer tons of scholarships and so on.

I'm thinking, eh, one is enough, but was interested if anyone has any experience with them.

Sounds like spam to me, but what do I know.

Look through their list of scholarships and see if you think you'd be eligible for any of them. It's worth it to spend a one-time $75 if you can get a good scholarship from it. Plus, if your school's chapter is active like mine is, it can be a good EC too (charity work, benefit concerts, working with high school students, etc). I got a $2000 scholarship through NSCS and I participated in some of their events on campus, so I would vote that it was worth it, but ymmv.

Definitely not spam, it's a legitimate organization.

OP, I just re-read your post and I want to clarify that NSCS is not just for community college students. I went to a 4-year university and it was one of the most active honors societies on campus. I was about to toss the letter in the trash when I got it, but I'm glad that I didn't because I am $2,000 richer for it. Their scholarships are especially good for study abroad. If your school doesn't have an active NSCS chapter, it might not be worthwhile because their scholarships require you to be an active member.

Thanks for that info. They do have an active chapter on our campus. I'll be looking into it.

I got a $100 scholarship I think back in the day, which I guess put me in black after membership fees. I actually joined because we had an active chapter and was able to find service projects with people in my school fairly easy. The people were cool and I had a good time while getting my volunteer hours in. That would be the main benefit of something like this opposed to just the opportunity for scholarships.
