The Official "I passed the first semester of med school" thread!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Retraction:
I'm not happy for myself at all. In fact I've resorted to sulking over the meaninglessness of my so-called accomplishments and am going to start rumors that I dropped out. Perhaps the spread of said rumors will mask the shameful truth that I passed my first semester. I believe that with proper counseling I can learn to trivialize the small victories of my life appropriately.

Oh gosh. We're gonna have to see this every semester for the next 3 1/2 years? Dude most peeps pass (historically). And for the few that don't, this thread just makes them feel worse.

The official "I passed the second semester...
The official "I don't have to take summer makeup classes
The official....

Let it go.

Dude most peeps pass .. Let it go.

Agreed. This reminds me of attending younger siblings' high school graduation and the, "they didn't think we'd make it, but we did," speeches. Yes, it's good to reflect on ones own achievements but does it really matter?

Congratulations yall! I remember how overwhelming the first semester was for me at times, and despite what those other humbugs say, it IS an achievement. You've accomplished the first step of many towards graduation 🙂 Don't let people shortchange your accomplishments, if you feel proud of finishing semester 1, well hell, go get a bottle of good champagne and some good friends and celebrate! After all, when you're 100 years old, you're not going to look back and wish you'd had LESS fun and celebrated FEWER things....

If it's important to you, then yes, it does.

Amen. I'm about to graduate with my bachelor's, and even last semester, I and two dear friends drove several hours round-trip just to have dinner elsewhere in a sort of good-food-better-company-now-that-semester-is-over way.

So yeah, I'd be happy to be one semester closer to an MD, too.

It could also be one semester close to dropping out.

Yep, it's good to celebrate stuff like graduation and passing 1st semester of med school, but to have the attitude of "they didn't think we'd make it, but we did" for doing things you're supposed to do is over the top. Kinda reminds me of the Chris Rock joke where he makes fun of parents bragging about taking care of their kids.
"I take care of my kids....What do you want, a f*cking cookie?"

Yeah well passing a semester at Hopkins is no joke 👎

If high school and college graduations can be celebrated, 1/8 of the way through what for some has been a quite trying adjustment can definitely be celebrated.

High school=one rung of the ladder, college perhaps two. 1/8 of med school also equals one to me!!!!

:hardy:

At first I was reluctant to "celebrate", but I realize that 1 week removed from medical school and my grades not even officially posted yet, I still know with certainty that I've passed my courses. That merits some amount of happiness for me given what I went thru for 4 months non-academically...

Happy nonetheless.

Reactions over being "1/8th over" may differ from person to person.

Can anyone join in the festivities even if they didn't JUST pass 1st semester?

8/8th of the way through!

Congrats!

Don't you mean we're 1/8th of the way to being crapped on by insurance companies? If so, I think I'll pull a van wilder in med school 😀

I'm not sure I passed yet. I'm still waiting on my midterm score. It wasn't released before winter break. I heard the average was pretty abysmal. :scared:

Too bad we're on a trimester here...

I remember being at high school graduation standing around thinking "Uhh, aren't we supposed to pass high school?" Considering I worked more in the first semester of med school than all of high school put together, its certainly worth a few drinks or so.

Plus we will have an "official" celebration, the white coat ceremony coming up in a few weeks. Now that to me feels like an unwarrented pat-on-the-back. Would make more sense to me if they had it at the end of second year.

theoretically this is true. However, the last thing you need is to add an official event somewhere between finals of second year, step1 and third year. They're just too close in proximity as it is!

3/8 done!!

Can't believe the last 1.5 years went by so fast... it's scary that in a few months, I'll actually be doing rotations. I don't think I know enough 😱

I thoroughly enjoyed the last five months. Moreso than I did all four years of undergrad. First year of med school can be utterly amazing if you choose the right school. And by right school I mean UVa.

I agree with all of this except the UVA part 😉

Medical school has been the best 5 months of my professional life. Between undergrad, grad school, and the career I had before medical school, I am very glad to finally be in medical school...

1/4 of the way through the classroom part 🙂
