Based on what you saw, what percentage of male interviewees had a pocket square?

Guys (and girls who know a thing or two about male fashion), what's the general consensus on wearing a pocket square in your suit for medical school interviews? I've seen conflicting recommendations, ranging from "absolutely don't do it" to "do it, it's a vital component of any suit." What are some of the pros and cons in terms of impression? And if one were to wear one, what color and what fold?

With that in mind, if you've already interviewed, I kindly ask that you participate in the poll so we can gather some real-world data on just how common pocket squares are on the med school interview trail.

I see it in a minority of students and residents who are interviewing but I don't look to them as arbitrers of male fashion. However, a nice TV fold in a coordinating color is stylish without being too flashy, IMHO. FWIW, I see it more commonly in those applying for surgical subspecialties where perhaps being more fashion forward is accepted (and worn by the attendings) than in primary care specialties. This may explain the differences in opinion.

Gradations of 10% are a bit too precise. If the groupings were 0-25%, 25-50%, 50-75%, and 75-100% I'd say 0-25%.

To be honest, people that think about this stuff are way over-thinking this. You're not interviewing for JCrew. Just wear a suit that fits reasonably well and isn't distracting. No one cares about the small details, everyone looks professional and well put together except those few who are just obviously not (white suit, too short dress, low cuts, etc). Most people don't have a pocket square, but having one will not change the fate of your interview.

(side note: that outfit above is sharp)
