The stupid way I just used to memorize Activating and Deactivating groups

Thought I'd post this for some entertainment. I was bored and came up with some pretty interesting ways to memorize Activating and Deactivating groups on Benzene rings.

Imagine the Benzene ring is a homeless guy asking for money (electrons).

1.) Activating (e- donating groups)

-NH2 = "How Nice of you to donate!"

-OH = "OH, you need some money? I'll donate to you."

-OR = "OR, if you'd prefer, I can buy you food instead!"

-R = "Really? You need money? Here you go."

-aryl group = It looks like like a squinty-eyed smiley face, so the homeless guy is happy you gave him money!

2.) Deactivating (e- withdrawing groups)

-Carbonyls = I just simply memorized these ones, haha.

-SO3H = "You want money? SO what?? I'm not helping you! I'm taking it all for myself!!!"

-Cyanide (C triple bond N) = "I'm CNister, I won't give anything to anyone!!!"

-NO2 = "You want money? NO!!!"

-N(+)R3 = "No, Really, stop asking me for money."

Hope this was amusing for you.

Easier way:

Activating = If the atom is bonded to a LESS electronegative element, it is activating (-OCH3, -CH3, -OR)

Deactivating = If the atom is bonded to a MORE electronegative element, it is deactivating (-NO2, -COOH, -CN)

But....what about the homeless guy?

This is pretty great. I've been compiling some mnemonics with the help of SDN, google and datqvault and they've been extraordinary helpful. (e.g. Mean Bitches Get None: Morula, Blastula, Gastrula, neurula). I have the activating/deactivating groups down but this is even helpful for me (I especially like the CNister guy).

 so cute!

👍 Works everytime and much easier to remember.

Like! 👍

Resurrection.

If it has lone pairs, it is ACTIVATING- Ortho/Para benzene bonded to ketone, is deactivating. WORks EVERY TIME.

If it has no lone pairs, it is DEACTIVATING- Meta

All Halides are deactivating due to E negativity, but Are ORTHO/PARA

That's as easy as it gets G.

Almost no one ever explained it as simply as this! I would always get a chart and be forced to memorize that! This makes my life way easier. Thanks!

I found my new favorite mnemonic!
