What's up with this word? When did it become the be all, end all in the field of public and community mental health. What does it even mean? I mean, I know what people I work with and who work in public policy positions say it means, but I tend to have a Princess Bride "inconceivable" moment whenever I hear politicians talk about it.

I assume you mean the recovery model of mental healthcare...not the "recovery" term often used in substance abuse treatment?

This was touted and verbalized alot in the VA healthcare system, with MY understanding that it was a crude method of utilization management due to a volume of dysfunction the system could no longer support. Not the true historical nature of the idea, I don't think, but true nonetheless?

I believe in alot of the ideas and principles of the recovery model, but I think it was often a way of rationing care in the VA. Sometimes very rightfully so...sometimes not (if you hold to the VA mission statement literally anyway).

I interviewed at a VA for internship and one of the few things I remember from that day was when one of the interviewers specifically asked me about my understanding of the term "recovery." I could tell right away that my response disappointed her.
