This is for those of us likely taking the step 1 soon who need a place to vent (as I am doing atm).

I'm not saying I hate medicine, just med school. For example, what day is it today? I do not know. I know I heard something about fathers day on the radio which puts me in June. So you're saying it's summer? That's okay I don't need sun, I'm sure the sweet glow from my computer screen will convert all the 7-dehydrocholesterol I need. Oh thanks U World for that awesome confidence booster of a 52% on my last 46. Girls? All the ladies I obviously need have PID, UTI, fibroids, or endometriosis. Hang on I hear people outside having fun I need to yell at for a sec. Stupid daycare kids think they can have fun in a sprinkler when they should be studying. You know what people think of when they see me at all hours of the day either over a book or in front of a computer screen? I'll tell you the first thing that comes to their mind isn't
"oh that's a med student". It's more like "I should probably keep an eye on this guy to prevent this inevitable terrorist attack". I'm just letting off steam. As a pre-3rd year studying for the step 1 I've been doing a lot of this lately and I thought it would be nice to create a place for others to do the same. I could go on about what I am pissed off with med school about but I'll save your time. I'm off to go troll some pre-med forums.

Honestly, enjoy it while you can. Studying for step 1 can be draining and stressful, but you also get to set your own schedule and have a significant amount of freedom in that sense. Certain aspects of M3 tend to be far more cumbersome/disheartening than step studying. But hang in there I suppose.

If you hate studying and working hard so much why don't you just stop? Perhaps family medicine/whatever you can land will better suit your work ethic. Studying doesn't end with medical school, being a good doctor requires board exams, attending conferences, and reading a lot of current research. In fact, you'll likely be taking exams/being lectured to all the way up until the day you retire.

Thank you, Judy Blume. Be lucky. There are some schools that do all of basic sciences in 1 year. MS-1/MS-2 is largely controllable timing wise where you can set your own schedule. Wait till you get to MS-3 year when even this will disappear. Contrary to the refrain, it doesn't get better.

Sounds pretty accurate. Strong username to first post topic correlation btw.

Don't go troll the pre med forums, be a normal, non-scum of the earth!

Pre-clinicals and especially Step 1 study time can be draining and not a fun time. Reading slides off of a computer screen, review books, and practice questions day in and day out can be disheartening to a young individual. Step 1 is doing all of that on crack, especially given the nature of the beast(only 1 attempt, with a low score making things a lot harder). At the same time, for people feeling this way, it's also important to balance all this hard work with some fun and sun! If you're always working and not having any relaxing time, you'll burn out.

Keep working hard, things get better, especially after Step 1, when the amount of studying goes down, and you can jump in the wards instead of reading boring books and lame questions...true you do this as a 3rd year, but not to the extent of 1st and 2nd year.

Don't go troll the pre med forums, be a normal, non-scum of the earth!...
I was just joking about trolling the pre-meds.
If you hate studying and working hard...
Say what Say? First of all thank you I didn't know what it took to be a good doctor until just now reading your post. You're missing the point, it's the work ethic that's brought us all here, and is the reason we have no free time, and lose track of time, and get a facial glaze from everyone when we want to talk to them about this awesome new GP314-96#purple53456 kinase we just learned about that will make you frustrated no matter how much you love it when you get here too my friend.

Hear, Hear! GTFO premeds

Then it's official. LostinLift just made so. LostinLift and I now hereby validate this thread as the "Official Unofficial I Hate Med School 2014" thread. Also, KnuxNole well spoken sir (I assume sir). As a fellow LoZ everything fan I tip my hat in the most respectful of ways to you. And 3rd+ years, yes I've heard it becomes a different kind of challenging. However you're straying from the original purpose of this thread. Also, Say, if you're still with me here, I should mention don't dog on any specialty when you get into med school. After undergrad it's just poor form.

How blessed you truly have it. Too many people complain about medical school once they are knee deep in the material. This is your dream. You strived assiduously to achieve this position in life and now you detest it? Give thanks for what you have. There are thousands who covet your current position, myself included.

You know that Family Medicine is not a lifestyle friendly specialty right? You have yet to start medical school, and you're lecturing to med students?

Remember this post during your OB-Gyn and General Surgery rotation, and esp. during internship, when you're treated like garbage, Medical Student (accepted).

How do you know that I'm pre-med? How do you know anyone is anything on this board. If I wanted to I could put "physician" as my status. Would that earn me more respect? Lol. I think that trying to establish a pissing order on the internet is kind of pointless. If I want to lecture to my higher ups on the internet, saying I'm a med student or physician, I can totally do that.

Anyways, I am indeed pre-med, but my parents are both physicians and they constantly are taking exams.

But I don't think you understood what I wrote. Family medicine is the go-to residency for those who fail to qualify for the more competitive residencies. Many people with poor work ethic (relatively speaking of course) wind up in this residency. Sure, family medicine isn't lifestyle friendly if you are a good doctor, but I know of plenty FM docs that work standard business hours and not an hour longer.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Plenty of hardworking, bright students who did well in classes, boards, and rotations go into primary care (FM/gen IM/gen peds). I'm guessing your parents are probably specialists who have pouring this crap down your ear since you were 3.

Tip: keep your mouth shut and try to pull your head out of your ass before you actually start medical school.

Why are you so angry? I'm not ****ting on family medicine. I never did, and I believe tons of students who are hard working end up doing family medicine because they are passionate about it. Is it not wrong though that along with those hard working students there are students in that residency are in it because they couldn't get in anything else? I'm sorry if I hit a sore spot. Insulting me and not replying to my post with content isn't very constructive.

Many of us have been around long enough to understand the attitude of each poster with regards to their position in the training process. Mainly because we have been there and we remember our/our classmates attitudes during this time. I'm not defending it, I'm just saying that many of the more experienced posters can pick out pre-meds, MS1/MS2, MS3, MS4, residents, and attendings based on their posting habits.

Anyways, I am indeed pre-med, but my parents are both physicians and they constantly are taking exams.

See.

Everyone is always taking exams. It's not just your parents. Family medicine, the specialty you're stating is for the "slacker," must take re-certification exams.

The first part may be true at times. The second part usually is not true. Family medicine works hard for their patients. They truly want to keep them out of the hospital and healthy, and work very hard to do so.

I also never said family medicine was for the slacker. It just so happens that many of the students I referenced end up in FM. As you said, all doctors are taking re-certification exams, which reinforces my original position. Thanks for your post though, first good quality response yet, and I understand and agree with your points.

I don't need to look at your status to know you're a premed.

Oh, DermViser. How I love reading your responses to people's posts on this board. Honestly they are mostly witty, and I typically agree with your logic. However, sometimes I find you quite contradictory. You try to white knight and raise your pitchfork when someone makes a comment perceived as negative to any specialty when you often do it yourself. Look at your signature in the above post (below for anyone to lazy to scroll)

"Check out non-core rotations like ophtho, derm, rads, path, rad onc and gas. Clerkship is like a liquor store; they keep the good stuff in the back, behind closed doors. --@Substance

What you're getting at with the end of your question is the thing that plagues people who actually want to do good. The people with good hearts, with good souls want to touch the lives of patients. To really cure disease, mend the wounded, and cure the sick. Too many people enter medical school with good intentions but are then met with hours upon hours of misery, the world closing around them, their relationships lost, their souls beaten. The response? "Man, i did really well... and for what? I hate patients, I have no friends, I lost my hobbies, and now I'm in debt. Do I really want to do family medicine?" BOOM the dermatologist is born. The REASON they went into medical school is no longer the REASON they want to do derm. They want a life. They want money. They did well enough to get it, so why not? --@OveractiveBrain"

These posts that you quoted in effect follow the same line as my post about family medicine. You imply the superiority and desirability of other specialties over family medicine.

I will certainly remember it. As far as it is up to me, once I start I will never complain about medical school or medical education. I will happily suffer the stress of medical school over what I have had to endure in the past. I hope you have a blessed day and enjoyable day, DermViser.

So glad I took my Step 1 exam back in Feb/March. Now I am on a 2 week Summer vacation during MS3, and headed into my 3rd rotation. It does get better (at least for clinical fun instead of textbook boredom). There is less freedom, and I honestly do not know my schedule during a rotation until 1 week before I start. That is the sh*ty part of MS3.

🤣

If you can still say this as a third year, I will be amazed. Don't be so uptight or hard on yourself and others! Most paths in life are hard, and people complain as a way to cope. It's okay.

I too as a premed thought med students whined way too much about the workload/lifestyle/whatever when they had worked so hard to become a medical student. Didn't they know what they were getting into when they started? Now a year in, I understand them much more. I really like medical school and am happy with my career choice, but I sure as hell can't say I never complain.

I'm gonna echo much of what has been said here.
Wait till 3rd year!!! Wait till 3rd year!
ヽ༼ ಠ益ಠ ༽ノ

Hmmm...

Clinical years of med school are hell. Honestly is it fair to make students work 60-80 hours/weeks as slaves?? And them force them to go a further 100k in debt??? All the while being treated like crap from interns, PMSing ob/gyns, and temper-tantrum surgeons.
4th year being a paradise is the biggest load of BS I've ever heard. It's even more stressful than 3rd year.

I think I know how to fix this. If you haven't completed at least 1 year of med school, please create and see the "I love med school and I can't wait to start" thread. This here will be for the rest of us, who have an admiration (+/- strange slightly romantic feelings, no homo) for Goljan's sweet sweet voice.

please leave this drivel in the premed forums

I also have a feedback for whoever made the Kaplan videos: The voice of the girl you picked to voice the biochem lectures makes me want to punch the girl who you picked to voice the biochem lectures, metaphorically.

People with 260+ at my school choose FM by choice. Yeah.

This whole process is funny, to be honest. When we're premeds, we want free full healthcare for everyone always, and tout primary care as the solution to the world's problems in our essays, and then once med school and residency sets in, we start adopting more conservative ideologies. I guess that's part of growing up.

Ironically, that "I love medical school" thread in pre-allo was actually pretty depressing.

Did you have to give family medicine a kick in the rear?

Why the majority of my classmates and even some MS2 asked me if I plan not to study for Step1 when I tell them I am interested in FM and psych? This is not only a premed stuff; even some med students think FM/psych are for the slackers...

These people are rather foolish. Certainly, there are slackers in every field. FM and psych, however, are not defined by slackers. FM docs are some of the hardest working docs out there.

You can just tell by reading the responses of the thread which posts are in medical school or who have gone through medical school, vs those which have not, profile tags completely excluded. I swear undergrads think med school is just rainbows, unicorns and pots of gold.

It has nothing to to do with the superiority of those specialties, genius. Notice Pathology is also in that list. The main reason it attracts medical students is the lifestyle.
