I literally forced myself to go to bed at midnight last night for the first time in about two weeks. I couldn't believe how good I felt this morning. Unfortunately , I don't think I can do this consistently if I want to do well in Dental school. Is it even possible to get 8 hours of sleep every night and still rock dental school? (Based on my 5 week experiment so far, I say NO)

I think maybe you are studying very inefficiently? I think 12am sleep time is very easily done especially during the relatively lax 1st year... Its the 2nd year when you will find your time highly crunched. I suppose it somewhat depends on what school you go to, and how slow you are at retaining information.

Midnight? I was in bed by 11pm and shot for 10 pm.... Efficiency is key.

+1 I get at least 8 hours every night- the extra studying when I'm that tired isn't worth it to me- granted I don't have a 4.0 but my GPA is not too shabby either

uh, this more than "somewhat" depends on the school you go to.

I forgot about the 1st yrs for UOP and UMD and the schools that take boards in their 1st years.

However, generally, 1st yr is simply time management and focus. For example, taking the weekend to study 8 hrs or more per day means you can study less on the weekdays. If you are studying 16 hrs+ on every weekend, you should be able to only study 4+ hrs/day on weekdays, giving PLENTY of time to sleep before 12am.

Interesting point. However, you forgot about waxing lab, and the HOURS it takes to build a tooth. Also research for those who might be into that stuff. Throw in eating right/saving money by cooking, exercising regularly, and the plain "unexpected", I think my sleep time dilemma is justified.

Sure is! Efficiency is the key though, I think. Work while you, play while you play and all that.

Hours? We were talking about being efficient! Sure shouldn't take hours to wax a single tooth 😉. Your time could be spent more efficiently.

OP is D1. And some of us do need the practice before things get perfect. And you are learning a new skill. Hey no one said it was easy, right?
Good luck.:luck:

I was actually in the waxing lab last Thursday night finishing up some work for FPD, and was suprised that there were a number of 1st years waxing at 11:30, and then they planned to go to the Health Science Library after to study for that Histo test you guys had the next day. I don't mean to say that this was necessarily a bad thing - just that I would have never done that because that's not what worked for me. What's important - and what took me the entire first semester to discover - is that you've got to find a study method that works for you. I found that what worked best for me was trying to go to bed early, and then waking up early and studying. Like someone else said, the studying that you actually get done at 2am is probably much less worthwhile than the sleep you could have been getting. Getting 8 hours of sleep will make everything better, trust me, haha.

Also, don't think that because some people study X hours a day and every weekend that you should be doing the exact same.

I know that I was going through the same thing in my first semester at Pitt, so I'll give you a run down of the next few semesters which will make the future look much better:

Fall 1st year - Hardest semester at Pitt (so far)
Spring 1st year - The classes are more difficult (Physio and Anatomy), but you only realistically have 2 hard classes at a time (Physio + 3 Anatomy classes spread out through the semester), so it's much easier to focus on them, this making the semester easier.
Summer 1st year - MUCH easier, we were done at like noon most days, classes are actually getting interesting.
Fall 2nd Year - We really only have 2 lecture classes, everything else is lab work, so it's time consuming, but not particularly hard (well, we'll see how this Pharm test goes t/m). This is one of the best semesters yet.

yeah wow i guess im in the minority then....once i leave school for the day it's game over on studying. i literally go home everyday before dinner time and do nothing. my only studying is all day on sundays, or the night before a test.

my motto is to just learn it as best i can in class and brush up on sunday. after football. i'm sure that this wont work next term or 2nd yr but so far straight a's knock on wood

I'm in my second year and this is close to what I do- work hard one or two nights/week then football Saturday and Sunday with maybe a little studying on Sundays

After having only gotten 4 hours of sleep the night prior, I was more or less dead all day yesterday, and I went home right after school, and ended up going to sleep at around 10, and woke up at 8, and man, did I feel amazing today. I was at school for 14 hours, and I still feel great, haha. So, sleep definitely works.

I'm glad someone thinks the same way. It does get ridiculous when you realized you go to the 11am game, then watch the 2 and Saturday night game along with the 12 and 3 o'clock games on Sunday.
