There is not a shortage of pharmacists. There is a shortage of pharmacists who want to do or are trained to do nursing (clinical pharmacy) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (clinical pharmacist specialist) in Patient Centered Medical Homes or Accountable Care Organizations under Value based payment models or population health models. Most people who choose pharmacy during the 😛harmacy boom" did not pick it to do nursing in team based care. Pharmacy has become somewhat of a scam. I do think there will be roles for pharmacist because PACT at the VA is a PCMH model. The role of the nurse is rapidly expanding to do the same job for less. Why choose pharmacy these days? It is really a slaughter and blood bath of previous trained pharmacist since they change the curriculum after the affordable care act passed. The PCMH is a model of care where you see anyone but the doctor to increase access to care and decrease cost. I have multiple references showing it is the same job with the same billing codes. this is a downgrade not a upgrade.
