Today I found out that I got accepted into ICO! I was so happy but even more shocked!!

The reason I'm posting this thread is because I wanted to let others who were in the same boat as I know that you don't have to be the perfect student to get into optometry school.

I had a 280 OAT score and still got in! I am NOT by any means saying that it is ok to get such a score, but instead I just want you to know that it is possible!! But again, please shoot for the best score possible and make your application as strong as possible! You never know what the admissions committee sees in you...heck it might be something that you yourself might not even realize!

Whether it was luck or something else, I'm just happy I got in. For those of you who have lost hope, don't!! Never give up on something you can't go a day without thinking about!

your gpa must have offset the low oat?

Congrats on getting in! But can you elaborate on what your stats were or your experiences??? That would definitely be helpful. Yes I am in the same boat and I am frightened. I only have a 2.8.. with no experience in optometry but I am trying. This year I just started wanting to become an optometrist...so i am still working on that goal! However, I am shaking in my boots because I did not do well in science courses..

It's nice to know that you got in! What was your gpa? I'm looking to apply there sometime soon.

I am also on the same boat and wondering what your gpa was? Also, how long after did you receive a supplement? How was the interview. Please let me know. I appreciate it.

Yeah if you don't mind letting us know what your GPA was...I have only managed a 290 on the OAT and am a little worried... :-/

Yeah the 3.7 gpa probably easily set off the 280 on the OAT..Not really the situation i am in

Sorry everyone, I completely forgot to respond! But I had a 3.3 GPA so my gpa wasn't all that great either.

ALSO, that link above is not me. That's another user.

I'll keep checking this in case you all ask more questions!

I had 3.1 GPA and 330 TS/AA OAT and got into SUNY 🙂
They probably liked my 91st percentile on physics and my passion for optometry.

Impressive! SUNY's my top choice and I'm around the same stats. Lets see what happens.

how did you approach physics? i'm struggling just to get a 300!

Honestly, I spent most of my time studying for Organic Chem because it was my weakest subject and I still got a 290. I spent the least time studying physics out of all the subjects. I'm more inclined to believe it is mostly innate ability that lets you do well in certain subjects. A lot of my classmates also agreed that men seem to have an easier time with physics in general. (feminists don't send me emails lol)

I just used my classnotes, my textbook, Kaplan OAT book and actually I used the DAT Destroyer which didn't have physics in it :/ If you are near NYC I can tutor you 🙂 I hope this helps in any way.

Remember to apply early for SUNY. I don't think Shnurek is a norm for SUNY admissions though. Their entry stats are one of the highest, alongside UCB and Waterloo.

Yup, I plan on applying by the end of August. I'm hoping to get killer OAT scores that they'll at least hand me an interview (scoring ~310 now with Kaplan).

Yes, I think I am really lucky I got in. I had everything done on OptomCAS in mid-September.

Wow that is pretty lucky. I remember when I applied in 2007, I had a 340 AA/TS, 3.45 GPA, and tons of experience and research...I wasn't even extended an interview at SUNY! haha. Maybe it was my wopping 280 in Reading comprehension (embarrassing considering I have aced every english class since middle school!) Damn you pontoons and dopamine/serotonin experiments on mice!! (almost sure they still use those for the reading comp part). Hmm...I wonder how different the applicant pool was...that year there were some ridiculous stats..comparable to medical school. I haven't looked at ASCO for the stats these days..but I remember a lot of OAT scores are lower than they used to be. But good luck.

The OAT was revamped and a present 330 would be equivalent to a past 340 if I recall correctly because scores keep going up. 280?? c'mon man, my lowest was 290 and it was in organic chemistry (the classic useless subject imo - except for pharms). My highest was reading comp 370. I had some weird mountains and valleys in my scores though.

For what (if anything) it's worth, I don't feel orgo. is a useless class in relation to optometry education. Orgo., II applies somewhat less directly, but much of what one learns in the first course is important to understanding at least the pharmocologic aspects of optometry, which compose a significant bulk of the field.
