hello future student doctors

my overall gpa is below 3.0, i heard that some schools do not even consider you for acceptance unless you have AT LEAST a 3.0 or above

question 1: is that true

question 2: if it is - do they look at other parts of the application

question 3: how many and which school operate under such a system

comment 1: this would be helpful - since I need to decied which schools to apply to

comment 2: comment one is important - since I do not want to waste time and money applying to schools that wouldn't even consider me

thanks

LONG POST SHORT: How many dental schools have a 3.0 GPA cut off? If my overall GPA is less than 3.0, am I wasting my time applying to certain schools?

i had below a 3.0 and not so great dats (18's & 19's) i got rejected to most schools right away but some were interested because i had a unique background. i managed to get interviewed and accepted. good luck to you!

same as above. Got automatically rejected from many schools that filtered. I had unique job experience so it worked out for me.

WOW - very encouraging news!

Thanks!

I keep my friends close, but my enemies closer

What backgrounds did you guys have that impressed the adcoms so much? They must have been very unique for the adcoms to overlook your GPAs. Congrats

Orangecounty, do you mind telling us what your background is? What in your opinion was the thing that interested your school the most?

I'm happy to hear that you got in. Sometimes is not just about the "grades" 🙄

Thanks in advance.

i went to the us military academy at west point and i am currently a lieutenant in the army. prior to west point i volunteered at a local medical center for 4 years and racked up around 1000 com. service hours.

OrangecountyDMD, did you mention your military background and unique experiences in your LOR or the application portion or both?

my LORs were from my professors at west point and i mentioned my experiences in my statement.

Hi. I was just wondering which schools would you recommend applying to if my stats are similar to yours? Thanks!

I'm not trying to discourage you, you may have a chance with an incredibly unique background, but it's going to have to really be something to get looked at and you'll really need to take some time calling schools to find out which ones actually READ your personal statement BEFORE they give interviews.

MOST schools won't ever look at you application in detail. They get ~1000-3000 applications, so they don't read EVERYONE'S personal statement. They put people in stacks of GPA and DAT and start going down the list. If they are full by the time they get to those with below a 3.0 GPA, your SOL. They really only look at you application critically once you get an interview, and with those stats, getting an interview might be a challenge. I personally know of 5 guys that didn't get an interview at any of the 10-15 schools they applied at. On the other hand, I do know ONE that had slightly above a 3.00 that did get in this year.

NYU and BU are probably good bets, they give A LOT of interviews and their waitlist move fast. Good luck, I wish you the best.
