For the first year of medical school, were there things that you needed and that were not so obvious? Reading previous threads, I am guessing you need a lot of highlighters. Is there anything else? If not, that's cool.

You're not going to be so busy that you can't run to the store and pick it up after school starts 🙂

You can always pick it up when you start. Actually my walmart trips were nice breaks from studying. BTW, I also noticed my impulse buying go up after I started first year.

found it on ebay for CHEAP!

This one a "medical brain"... that's us right?

1- highlighters in bulk
2- white lab coat with cuffs for anatomy lab (keeps smell down when properly gloved)
3- ssri

redbull, many highlighters, earplugs

Exactly! But you can't get that ahead of time - you have to wait until you're shaking, having hot/cold sweats, and crying jags - and then your student health center will be more than happy to give you the needed script - they see it every year.

An ipod for listening to music while studying...makes time fly better 🙂

these are the people who make the classroom a less fun place to be.

You need a desire to explore and a subscription to your local newspaper. I live on campus with graduate students of all sorts and it shocks me that I am the only one each morning to receive a newspaper.

There is life outside of the classroom, and at this level, you should engage it. For your own sake!

My dad always tells me how medical school and residency were like 8 years of his life where he totally fell out of touch with society. He got to the point where he'd look at the frontpage and just have no clue what was going on in the world.

personally i just set the homepage on my web browser to my news source of choice, then i can just quickly glance over what's going on when i jump on the web.

Yep. CNN.com's been my homepage for years. Personally I like having the more national news of that site as opposed to the more local news from the paper here. Plus, it's free.

actually, starting third year, I'm finding that some of these little nagging, annoying errands are actually pretty hard to get to...

How can you go do something or buy something at a place that's open like 9-6 when you are in the hospital from 5-7?

(maybe that's only surgery....but you know...still...)

What stores are only open 9 to 6? Doctor/dentist/hairstylist/bank are the only things I'm thinking of that might cause difficulty. You can buy pretty much everything at Wal-Mart, your local grocery store or Walgreens, and they're generally open 24 hours.

One might think that would be true. However, for those of us who live sans car and Walmart access, the norm is more like 10am-7pm or 9am-6pm for a lot of stores. Still, it's usually possible to find a 24 hour drugstore/convenience market and most of the grocery stores are at least open till 9pm.
