I just wanted to get some opinions on if this research would look good. First, a little background. I'm a computer science major in my junior year. For the past half year I've been working as an intern in a big software company. But next semester, one of my professors told me he'll have three open spots for undergraduates for his biometric facial recognition research group. So I'm thinking of applying and quitting my software company job. Now, I know research looks great for med schools. If I was able to get the research position, I was told I'd have a chance to get my name on some published papers which I think med schools would love. But does it matter that the research isn't directly related to health care? If it does matter, is it even worth it for me to switch from my internship. I think it would look good, but I just wanted to hear what other people had to say. Thanks.

That sounds extremely interesting. Do it. 👍 As long as you're publishing in a peer-reviewed journal, I think it's all the same to adcoms. What's more, you will probably enjoy the research, which will show when you interview. GL.

Do it! It sounds really interesting and would give you great experience. Research is important because of the skills that it teaches you, not necessarily because of the subject.

Cool, definitely seems like the consensus is do it.

It will only look good if you are enthusiastic about it and get things done (posters/talks/publications). This is only going to happen if you enjoy the work, so don't do it just to do it, do it if you are interested.
