I woke up today for a good laugh. A high schooler I know said that she's going to go Johns Hopkins for medical school. Now this is a girl that is aiming for an Ivy undergrad, but doesn't quite have the stats. It's always good to aim high, but it's appropriate to at least use the words "I hope to" or "I want to."

Such delusion... Ignorance truly is bliss, isn't it?

she's in high school, it's not nice to laugh at someone's disability

No different than a premed knows med schools will overlook that 22 mcat or a med student who is going to match radiology with a 218 step. Let people enjoy their fantasy world, They all wake up eventually. 😍

When Rudy said he was going to play football for Notre Dame "they" laughed at him

When Jeter said he'd play for the NY Yankees one day and even had big poster of Yankees stadium on his wall, "they" laughed at him

In October Sky those kids got laughed

Good luck to the h.s. girl. I think h.s.'s a joke and all but in all honesty good luck to her. Hope she can't shut you up and prevent you from slamming the "I told you so" axe on her

👍👍
I think if she has that dream prior to undergrad, she is going to be focused and do well.

One of my good friends had the dream of going to Hopkins undergrad and med ever since I met her in middle school.

...she's about to graduate from Hopkins, and I'm sure after taking a year off she'll be more than capable of getting into their med school. I agree that at times setting those kinds of goals can be kind of ridiculous, but I do think there's something to be said for having a specific goal and striving to achieve it.

wow. how encouraging. Nice to hear that story, man 😎 I just started putting together a dream board last night 😉

I agree totally, but the way it was said made it sound like "Yeah, I'll go there, why not?" It sounded like she thought it was no big deal, like "Where else could I go?"

Plus, she wants to be a PCP (pediatrician). There was one conversation we had when she was like "Research? I'm not going to waste my time doing that in undergrad." But Hopkins is a research med school...:scared:

Okay now I take all that I said back 😳 sounds like girl's a bit arrogant as-well.

Omg, I bet she was Asian or Indian because that's just not normal, its certainly impressive, but just crazy.

As for the high school kid, just tell her to get back to doing the SAT question of the day.

I wouldn't laugh at her, but encourage her. Even be her mentor through the process. She has high goals - obviously she wants to go to college, and eventually go to medical school and become a doctor. That's an admirable goal. We need more people goals in life. Now whether it's an ivy league for college or hopkins for medical school doesn't matter.

In 2009, 70% of high school graduates enroll in college or post-secondary education. The 6-year college completion rate is around 55% (for those enrolled in bachelor degree programs), and 27% for those enrolled in associate degree programs.

There's nothing wrong with dreams and goals. She wants to be a doctor someday - the process is difficult enough as it is - why not help her along the way.

At least she didn't plan on going to John Hopkins.

But Johnny does have some sweet weed though!

granted this girl sounds crazy, but she may well have the drive to make these things happen - if she's successful her ignorances will fall away as she goes. she has time, after all.

i recall a thread started by a high-schooler who was very clear about the fact that he wanted to attend MIT and then do HST at Harvard. Most people laughed at him and told him to go back to studying for SATs. He didn't come back to update the thread but years later someone found him on MDApps and lo and behold....

I remember that. It was pretty awesome actually.

haha nooooooo. i just thought it was a really cool story: the thread was like 8 years old and someone here with time on their hands was able to connect the dots and resurrected the thread.

(if it's even true. stupid intarwebs, making me cynical)

I am just like her then. I don't see it as being ignorant or unrealistic.

It's the attitude that you have and a mind set towards certaing things or life in general. Especially when it comes to achieving goals. You can tell yourself "I hope I can" or "I want to". Well anyone can do that. She chooses to say "I will" which is far more powerful and motivating then the other. You can wish, hope and want all day long. Sometimes you just have to do it 🙂 I am amazed that she starts to have this mind set already in HS. I wish I did back then.

Good luck to her! If she keeps that attitude up and put a lot of hard work into it then I bet she will get into that school!

Maybe he just put it on his MDapps to feel better about himself, even if it didn't happen lol.

ITT: OP tried to be cool and talk bad about a high school kid with an admirable goal. But once everyone told him otherwise, he changes the story to make the high schooler seem even worse.

OP, your thread backfired...

Its better to have goals than no goals, even if they are misinformed. Eventually she will learn the reality of med school admissions, but I think its good that she is aiming high even before she has started college. I didn't have any goals when I started college and that's why my grades sucked for the first few semesters.

I think its natural when people first formulate their goals to imagine being "the best" in whatever field their wanting to go into. While chances are, she won't be going to JHU, she might very well be motivated by this dream to the extent that when she "wakes up" she's in a perfectly good position to go to medical school. Better than the junior in undergrad that I saw at a pre-med conference the other day (who brought her mom along too....) who was talking about how DOs " do message and stuff, I looked it up online." That sort of ignorance is whats bad, having high goals never hurt anyone.

Except that it's not unreasonable to get into radiology with a nearly average board score...

I agree, goals are good, the difference between someone saying I want to go to johns hopkins and someone saying I'll go to whatever school will take me might be the difference in attitude that motivates someone to study those extra couple hours for every test, and so on. People need small goals within their big goals because if someones only goal is to be an MD they'll end up in the Caribbean.

Worry about yourself and your grades. You wasting your time shooting someone down over the internet, much like I am right now.
