My friend, who lives in Alabama, applied for a pharmacy tech job at the local hospital. She got an interview in August with the manager of the hospital pharmacy department and a couple of weeks later was offered the position. She was told that they skipped a couple of steps and that she needed to fill out an application and do a brief interview with Human Resources and the position would be hers. Ever since then she has not heard a word from them. She has left several messages for the Human Resources person she interviewed with, but he doesn't return her calls. Also, she's called the hospital pharmacy weekly. The pharmacy department insists it wants her on the staff and says they have tried to contact the HR person to no avail. Do you guys have any advice on what she should do?

All she can do is wait, they are probably doing a background check. It took Human resource a month to hire me, even though I was practically working at the pharmacy hospital... patience is the key.

Well, now she told me that she talked to the VP of Human Resources and that the VP spoke to the HR person and he denies receiving any messages from my friend. He also said that he never got a request from the pharmacy department to hire her, which is BS. The department tells her one thing and now this guy is saying another. She has the message of the offering of the job on her answering machine. This whole thing is really screwed, I told her to file a complaint against the hospital.

If I have learned anything about hospital pharmacy it is this. It is a very political place. At one time I was on active staff at four hospitals on a per diem basis totaling over sixty hours a week. Which brings me to my point.

The best way to get your foot in the door is to come on board either part time or per diem preferably with the recommendation of someone who already works there. This way they can look you over and you can look them over. You will either fit in or you won't. If you don't you might as well leave because they will force you out one way or another. This factoid does not even address your ability to do the job.

Obviously you are getting the run around and it may or may not be HR that is doing the jerking. Cut your losses by looking elsewhere and give them all the attention they deserve.
