Starting in on my sixth week of MS1 and I have to say that this is some of the most boring sh1t ever. Not easy boring, just boring. I thought I would love gross anatomy and I can honestly say that i f'ing hate that class. Biochem...boring. Molecular biology....boring. Fake little medicine cases to be discussed in small groups....extra boring. What bothers me is that these are subjects that i would enjoy in another setting, but for some reason its all i can do to drag myself to class.

I never imagined medical school would be this lame.

it does seem lame sometimes, but it does set up the basics for when you start talking about the pathology. For example, You can't understand the pathophysiology of a subdural hematoma if you don't know the anatomy of the meninges layers and physiology of blood flow... If you find class boring then I'd stop going and study the information on your own, does your school have a note pool/noteservice program that provides transcripts of classes, b/c I'd think about something like that...

Well, sometimes med school sucks =p. Though u're only in the 6th week and probably haven't gotten into some of the more interesting stuff. Sounds like u're doing a lot of basics. Hope it gets better for u.

It gets better. I despised first year and my grades showed it. I like 2nd year subjects much better and 3rd and 4th get progressively better. Keep at it.

I'm halfway through our 10-week anatomy/embryology core. Anatomy is interesting - just not at the pace required to plow through all of it in 10 weeks. In any case, I never thought that I would actually be looking FORWARD to biochemistry - but I can't wait for core 2 (Cellular Processes)

Second year is only marginally better. Stick it out for the wards--at least, that's what I keep telling myself...

my thoughts exactly....

"Though these young men unfortunately fail to understand that the sacrifice of life is, perhaps, the easiest of all sacrifices, and that to sacrifice, for instance, five or six years of their seething youth to hard and tedious study, if only to multiply tenfold their powers of serving the truth and the cause they have set before them as their goal--such a sacrifice is utterly beyond the strength of many of them."

Come on man this is exciting stuff!!! Anatomy is pretty cool, you must be a non science major if you find this stuff boring. Have to say biochem and molecular bio are not the most exciting in the world, but come on anatomy is real interesting. I guess we are different. I hope it gets better for you.

I hate anatomy too, but I like physiology and once I realised that biochem is really physiology but on a really really detailed level I came to like it too. Hang in there, it'll get better.

Hey, good quote. Sounds like a German philosopher...

i agree.... i think anatomy is fun. I think it also helps than my school is really into PBL and showing how the stuff we learn applies clinically.

Last week we had an acupuncturist come in and talk about the five elements and how they make people smell. Class ended with all 100 of us balancing on one foot trying to make our chi flow while the teacher yelled at us to "keep an open mind."

Anyone else's school pull this kind of stuff?

we had a person trained in chinese medicine and a person trained in the Andrew method come to our neuro class the other day for a lecture on integrated approachs to lower back pain
and a GP who wasn't one, but discussed osteopathy and chiropracty.

What is the Andrew method? I've heard of the Alexander technique and all kinds of stuff - but never that.

I wish my school did stuff like that. But, as usual, it's sit in straight rows, watch powerpoint and take notes. UGGHHH!

I'm in neuro study mode, so i may have made a paraphrasic error, indicative of an early Broca's aphasia, I think  It may have been Alexander technique I meant. I don't know. It was a postural thing and had something to do with not using muscles unnecessarily and getting rid of bad habits of movement.

Sorry 🙂. I didn't mean to sound critical. Was just curious and I've never heard of it - I'm pretty interested in complementary/alternative medicine but we don't get much of it. Good luck studying!!!

If you sounded critical, you would've met w/ a different smiley. "😡" or something much worse. like something with a gun...a really big gun. a really really big gun...and lots of them...whoa.

During our principles of clinical medicine class last week, we had a FP resident who is doing the integrative medicine fellowship at my school (one of only 7 nationwide I believe, combines complementary/alternative medicine with traditional western medicine training) do a talk on stress management where we did deep breathing exercises and a "guided imagery." It was pretty relaxing, but I don't know that it helped my stress level--it was kind of depressing when they turned the lights back up and I had to accept that I wasn't on the beach in Tulum after all. Now all I want to do is plan a trip to Costa Rica or Africa for next summer instead of studying for my rapidly approaching anatomy test. And I agree with the OP, so far med school classes are hard for me to get excited about, too--I understand why we need to know it and some of it is interesting (especially clinical correlations, which my school makes a big effort to incorporate), but I think the pace is what ruins it for me. If we were going over this at about half the rate we currently are, I wouldn't feel so stressed and resentful of having to study all the time and could probably enjoy it more. Unfortunately, I don't think that's going to change much in the next 2 years, and third year I'll probably be looking back to how much sleep I am getting now and think about what a cream dream it all was. Oh well. 🙄

Drop out.

I know where you're at. I have been amazingly unimpressed with med school. I mentioned to a pharmacy friend of mine how bad the lectures are and he LAUGHED. He said that PhDs/researchers are the worst teachers. If you're really bored, maybe go to less lectures. Just get good grades and do some extracurricular activities. Start looking for what area you want to work in. In other words, tough it out. Starting 3rd year, the lectures are over.

And getting puked on begins! Oh, and lube up that index finger, prostates are waiting. AH, the magic of clinical years!

Not at my school they're not. Depending on the particular clerkship, we usually spent between 5-10 hrs/wk in lecture/conference. Probably not as bad time-wise as the preclinical years, but having to dealing with a boring speaker at 7am or 4pm is torture.

What makes you think that some of us haven't been looking forward to that most of all??? 😕
