I'm sorry but it's hard to believe anything the NYTimes reports. The second half of this article is quoting "Ms. Abrams" who works for a "nonprofit" 501(c)(4) organization called Student Debt Crisis. Here's the best part about this article - they aren't even talking about working for a government association such as a public health clinic or FQHC with an HPSA score of 16 or higher - but instead, the reporter is beating around the bush and throwing up a whole bunch of fear, uncertainty, and doubt and actually referring to people who were banking on PSLF for working for a "nonprofit organization" like Student Debt Crisis:
From the Article:
"At that point, others whose certifications were approved by FedLoan could discover that the Education Department has a different position. Some employers clearly qualify — the definition of a “government organization” is fairly straightforward — but the rules for certain nonprofit organizations are harder to interpret.
“It’s kind of a no man’s land,” Ms. Abrams said. “We don’t know how this will pan out.”
So here's the kicker...Ms. Abrams works for Student Debt Crisis as stated above, which is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization. If you know anything about nonprofit organizations, you will know just how easy it is to get an EIN and file for a 501(c)(4) status which, unlike a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (i.e. Red Cross), does not have to disclose their donors and are allowed to participate in politics as long as they don't spend more than 50% of their funds on politics. Why is this important? These organizations can now influence politics and spend millions and millions on advertising to lobby empty political messages to try to sway Americans political stances. The best part about it is that unlike a Super PAC - they don't have to disclose their donors! My favorite example is during this last election our good old corrupt billionaire George Soros donated millions and millions and millions to Citizens United and other 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations alike to print thousands of the same exact protest signs and distributed them to thousands for all their "marches" and "protests" in an attempt to sway Americans opinions (it didn't work obviously).
Moral of the story is that these people that work for these "nonprofit 501(c)(4)" organization that don't actually do anything beneficial for society are now complaining because the government doesn't consider their organization as eligible to receive public service loan forgiveness. Surprise, surprise! When you don't actually do anything to benefit the good of humanity except throw up a bunch of fear, uncertainty, and doubt - don't expect taxpayers to foot the bill on your Gender Studies degree from UCLA, Natalia Abrams.
To conclude - this article does not apply to anyone here on this forum if they plan on practicing dentistry in a public health clinic, FQHC, or the VA. Your loan forgiveness will be honored. No need to worry.
