those who did postbacc/masters: which programs?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i'm from cali, but did a masters program at BU through their med school.

I did my master's degree at the university that is in conjunction with the dental school I was applying to and it worked well. In my case I did my master's at SIUE with a goal of acceptance at SIU.

so after your postbacc at siu, you went to their dental school w/o waiting another year during the application process?
cuz i'm looking for a postbacc/masters program where i can enter this fall 06 and enter d-school fall 07. i guess these are the ones w/ linkage to their respective d-schools. is that right?

also, is it better to do a postbacc or a masters? sorry i'm really new to this, so i have many questions...and the postbacc section on sdn doesn't help much since its mostly geared towards premeds. 😴

i am currently in ucsf's postbac, and got accepted for fall 2006.

just wondering...is ucsf's postbacc program for minorities only? how long did it take u to get accepted into d-school? lets say that i want to apply this summer for d-school in order to get in for 2007 and i decide to either do a postbacc or jsut take some upper div classes at a university how will that help me in terms of admissions looking at my grades since they wont be on my transcriots that i send to addsas?

i enrolled in the post bac in 2005, and accepted in 2006. that's only 1 year. i did not wait an extra year.

ucsf's post bac is for disadvantaged students; there are many types of disadvantages other than your race.

plus, you must be a california resident.

I did an MPH in toxicology at Columbia University and figured out half-way through that I wanted to do dental school, on account of living next to some dental students.

is it hard to get into that postbacc? also, did you get in b/c it was linked to ucsf, or could u have gone to other d-schools? the reason i'm asking is b/c i don't want ucsf to be my ONLY option, b/c what if i won't get into ucsf?
also, since u didn't wait another year, does that mean u didn't apply through aadsas (since aadsas takes a year to proces...)?

sorry, i'm new to this and a little confused as to how things work... 😳

ucla has a post bacc program as well for disadvantaged students. They get to take extension sciecne courses as well as 1st year dental school courses with 1st year students.

If you want more info on it contact Dr. Marcus, he's part of the UCLA Denal School's Public Health division.

thanks for the replies guys. i'm graduating witha bio degree this june, so i have taken a lot of upper level bio classes. would it look bad if i do a postbacc, which also has upper level classes? the with master's programs, is that their deadlines have passed already (atleast in my school)...are there master's programs whose deadlines haven't passed yet?

thanks!

i don't really know how hard it is to get into ucsf's post bac, but they ususally only have 10-15 students admitted each year. no, you do not have to go to ucsf dental, but i think they would like you to go there if they accept you. i applied through aadsas just as any other applicant during the program.

the program has a very high success rate (99%) of getting students into a dental school, not necessarily ucsf.

you should go to ucsf's website and look under enrichment programs. there is a lot of details there.
